Loop PR: Car Club Streetcar Expands in Camden

LONDON--Rapid take up of the Streetcar.com service by Camden residents has led to the operator and council adding 19 new locations, to be launched next month.

“I am delighted with Streetcar in Camden. It is cheaper, greener and more convenient than owning a car.”

Streetcar, which hires BMWs, VW Golfs, Polos and Transporter vans on a pay-as-you-go basis, has doubled its membership in Camden over the past year to 4,500 members and, in partnership with Camden council, is increasing its locations from 66 to 85 across the Borough1 (housing over 120 vehicles) to cope with this rise in demand.

Commenting on the company’s success, Brett Akker, Streetcar co-founder, said: "Camden residents have really embraced the flexibility and convenience that Streetcar can offer and we are delighted to be adding more locations to meet demand. The great news is that the vast majority of Camden residents will now have a Streetcar within a 5 minute walk of home.”

The scheme is simple to use. Members can reserve a car online (www.streetcar.com) or over the phone, from just £4.95 per hour, and use smartcards to unlock the vehicle. At the end of the journey the car is returned to its dedicated Streetcar parking bay. Camden-based Sam Taylor, who regularly uses Streetcar, said: “I am delighted with Streetcar in Camden. It is cheaper, greener and more convenient than owning a car.”

1. By using Streetcar vehicles for staff business travel, organisations can make significant savings against running their own fleet. Streetcar is the business travel option for over 2000 businesses including Surrey County Council who saw a cost reduction of 26% per mile driven with Streetcar compared to their previous car pool costs.

2. Independent research conducted by Transport for London shows that each car club vehicle on the road replaces an average of 26 privately-owned cars. This is because each car has an average of 40 users and, of those, over half chose not to buy (or replace) a car when they join the club. Streetcar has already taken over 20,000 privately-owned cars off the UK's streets and is aiming to prevent the emission of around 50,000 tonnes of CO2 over the next two years. • Case studies are available on request.
