Consumer Alert: Millions of Cars on the Road With Unfixed Recalls
![]() |
Millions of vehicles are recalled by manufacturers every year -- more than 10 million vehicles in 2008 alone, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, many of the affected vehicles can be resold without the recall ever being fixed. Estimates are that more than one out of every four recalled vehicles goes unfixed.
Carfax reminds used car shoppers to be on the lookout for open recalls. Car buyers and owners can check for existing recalls for free using the vehicle identification number (VIN) at http://www.carfax.com/cfm/recall_page.cfm. Vehicle recall information also is available at www.nhtsa.gov and www.iihs.org.
