Latest tour winner Canard confident as Supercross series arrives in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (Feb. 3) -- GEICO Powersports Honda rider Trey Canard isn't letting his victory at last weekend's AMA Monster Energy Supercross Lites race go to his head. He just doesn't have the time.

Canard and the rest of team GEICO Powersports Honda head to Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego for the fifth race of the season this weekend, which has given Canard little time to revel in last Saturday's success.

"I'm trying to forget about it a little and take the positives to the next race," Canard said. "That way you aren't in la-la land all the next week. I'm just trying to get ready for this next race, and excited to build on our success and try to keep the ball rolling."

Last week's win in San Francisco was the third podium finish in four starts for the 19-year old from Oklahoma. It also pulled Canard closer to the points lead. He's now in second place, 16 points behind leader Jake Weimer.

"Last week wasn't a whole lot different than previous weeks, except that I got a good start," Canard said of his wire-to-wire victory. "Getting that good start helps a whole lot. Getting through that first turn is the key.

"There are things you can do (during practice) that help, but nothing compares to the race itself. I've just got to be ready to go when I get to the race, make sure my efforts are there during the start, and go from there."

Canard added that his foot, which was run over earlier in the season, has healed up and will not be a factor in San Diego.

Canard's Supercross Lites teammate Blake Wharton, who is fifth in the standings, will also be racing and looking to rebound from a season-low 13th place finish in San Francisco.

In the Supercross 450 side, popular veteran Kevin Windham sits in fifth in the standings. Windham is looking to get back onto the podium after an 11th place finish last weekend, the first time all season he had finished outside the top six.
