FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: SI Watchdog Group to protest potholes in Staten Island with celebrity Friends and Playboy Bunnies
Staten Island , NY December 21stth 2009

There is a new issue that Staten Island citizens need to deal with. The black craters that have carved out the city streets have been a nuisance for drivers for decades. Known as “Potholes?? they are formed as the roadway or sidewalk material slowly starts to break away, eventually leaving a hole. In colder climates, such as New York, water can seep into the already cracked pavement. The larger they get, the more dangerous potholes can be to pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. On Monday November 16th 2009 Staten Island Good Neighborhood Association Vice President Mark Fiore’s mother, June Fiore, a Guidance Counselor for the Board of Education hit a pothole and punctured her passenger tire narrowing escaping a major accident. Roadways have become increasingly dangerous especially for Staten Islanders.

The Staten Island Good Neighborhood Association is calling on safer roadways for Staten Island. The replacement tire of Mr. Fiores mother was only $261, a small price to pay but others in the past were not so lucky. Staten Island needs safer roadways because it will protect people against accidents which will make the community a more attractive place to live. It will give peace of mind to drivers and people will save money when they don’t have to pay for repairs or even medical expenses. There will be less traffic and the flow of cars will be smooth sailing. The Association wants stricter preventive measures. If you or a loved one has been injured due to improper road or sidewalk maintenance resulting in a pothole then you know how this is. When a pothole is on a city street or on a sidewalk in front of city-owned property, the municipality is generally responsible for such repairs and certain sidewalks are supposed to be maintained by the private owner of the building. Staten Island Good Neighborhood Association President and Staten Island born and John “JE?? Englebert knows first hand about city potholes. In June 2000 Englebert was involved on a major car accident in his Mercedes Benz on the West Side Hwy, NYC driving back home to Brooklyn where he briefly lived. I had 2 of the best lawyers in Staten Island handle my case and basically the city took no responsibility for the accident and the pothole that lead to my car being totaled and a major accident were I was hospitalized for months. Liability was just swept under the rug!! Says Englebert "As any driver knows there's always been a big problem with potholes in the city. Every time I hit a pothole I bend a rim, or puncture a tire and depending on the type of car you drive it has cost me up to $1,600 in repairs," says Englebert. “With all the money we pay in taxes where is all our money going?? says Fiore “I’ve seen several pothole fixed then months later there’s a hole there again. The state still is not doing their job in maintaining the roads." there should be no extended time frame for repairs. "Once a pothole is reported, it should be repaired in 24 hours." says Englebert.

The Staten Island Good Neighborhood Association is staging a picket to bring awareness to the issue. They are planning there demonstration outside the Staten Island Borough Commissioner’s office of the Dept of Transportation at 10 Richmond Terrace in Staten Island at the end of the month. Englebert a nightlife fixture in NYC and owning several nightclubs has done numerous high profile events like The Playboy Mansion LA on Halloween and has a high roster of celebrity clients and friends who he will be reaching out to join the cause. Staten Island alumni Ricky Schroeder, Christina Aguilera and Alyssa Milano will be contacted. Englebert also has some interesting ideas as to how to bring attention to the issue. How many people would pay attention if there were playboy bunnies in bikini's that were picketing outside the Borough Commissioner’s office. Englebert always thinks outside of the box.
