OSRAM SYLVANIA and College for Creative Studies Announce LED Lighting Design Winners

Top three winners chosen in first automotive LED student design contest

HILLSBORO, N.H., Dec. 17 -- OSRAM SYLVANIA, the world's leading manufacturer of automotive lighting and College for Creative Studies (CCS), one of the world's preeminent schools of transportation design have announced the winners of the first OSRAM Automotive Lighting Design Challenge.

The 2009 OSRAM Automotive Lighting Design Challenge is designed to educate future transportation designers on the many benefits of advanced LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting technologies and the design freedom they offer. Entries were judged on creative execution of the design and the innovative use of LED technology for a total of $4,500 in scholarships. The winning entries were unveiled at a ceremony held at CCS's prestigious A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education. The top-three winners are:

  1st Place  - $2,500 - Kisun Shin
  2nd Place - $1,500 - Johad Ellis
  3rd Place  - $500   - Cara Kim

"LEDs are influencing the way automotive designers think about automotive exterior lighting," said David Hulick, OSRAM SYLVANIA global product marketing manager for automotive LED systems. "LEDs are energy efficient, environmentally-preferable and provide design flexibility that is showcased in the inspired contest submissions from CCS students."

The OSRAM Automotive Lighting Design Challenge ran concurrently with CCS's fall curriculum for second year students in the university's Transportation Design program. Contest entrants were asked to design a concept for a forward lighting application using OSRAM LED technologies.

Contest judging was conducted by renowned automotive designers, Pat Schiavone, North American Truck & SUV Design Director for Ford Motor Company, and Bob Boniface, Director of GM's Advanced Design Studio. They were joined by representatives from OSRAM SYLVANIA.

"It allowed our students the opportunity to be at the forefront of exciting new technologies that are going to be shaping the overall environmental landscape of future transportation design."
