Hyundai Most Carbon-Efficient Volume Auto Brand
SYDNEY – December 15. 2009: Hyundai is the most carbon-efficient volume auto brand in Australia according to a report issued by the National Transport Commission (NTC).
Fifteen manufacturers annually sell 95 per cent of new vehicles in Australia. Of these manufacturers, Hyundai recorded the lowest average CO2 vehicle emissions in 2006, 2007, 2008 as well as January to August 2009 (achieving 181 g/km).*
Hyundai’s newest models in the Australian market continue to lead the way. The i30cw SX CRDi manual wagon is Australia’s most fuel efficient wagon^ consuming just 4.9 L/100km+. The new seven seat Santa Fe R-2.2 SLX 6-speed manual is Australia’s most fuel efficient medium SUV^, with a combined fuel consumption of 6.7 L/100km+.
The story is echoed in the U.S., where Hyundai has topped the charts in the latest U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fuel economy report. Delivering on its promise last year to become the leading manufacturer in fuel economy, Hyundai passed all other manufacturers in U.S. Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE), including traditional leaders like Honda and Toyota.
The results from the Australian National Transport Commission and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports demonstrate the effectiveness of Hyundai’s global value-driven fuel-efficiency strategy, which focuses on the intelligent application of cost-effective technologies. The U.S. report also substantiates Hyundai’s leadership in the race to achieve the U.S. government-mandated 2016 CAFE standard of 35.5 miles per gallon (6.6L/100km).
The EPA 2009 Light-Duty Automotive Technology and Fuel Economy Trends Report indicates that Hyundai has the best laboratory fuel economy at 7.8L/100km (30.1mpg), and was the only automaker to top 30mpg.
“A result like this doesn’t happen by chance,” said Hyundai Motor Company Australia’s Director of Sales and Marketing Kevin McCann. “Excellence in fuel efficiency and environmental protection is an outcome of Hyundai’s vision to become a leader in environmental sustainability…something we saw mirrored in real world competition when the new Santa Fe R-Series took out its category in the Global Green Challenge from Darwin to Adelaide in October.”
Next year, Hyundai will introduce the all-new mid-sized sedan codenamed YF which promises technologies such as direct-injection, delivering fuel directly into the engine’s combustion chambers for improved performance whilst reducing fuel consumption.
