Kids Building Bikes at Reynolds and Reynolds for Military Families' Kids

100 Bikes Assembled and Given to Children of Ohio Soldiers Deployed to Iraq

KETTERING, Ohio, Dec. 7 -- The children of Reynolds employees joined together early Saturday, Dec. 5, for the company's third annual Bike Build for Kids to continue the tradition of children building bicycles to give to other children during the holiday season. This year, the bikes were given to children whose parents are currently deployed in Iraq as members of the Ohio National Guard C-Troop 2/107 Cavalry unit based in Xenia.

During the Bike Build, which was held at Reynolds Headquarters, the children of Reynolds employees unboxed the bicycle frames and parts and then completed final assembly - adding seat, handlebars, pedals, wheels, accessories, and inspecting each bike. As a final step, the bikes were tagged with a homemade holiday card signed by the youngster who assembled the bicycle. All the finished bikes were lined up in the Reynolds and Reynolds lobby and then loaded onto trucks and trailers and taken to the National Guard unit's family Christmas party.

"Among all the charitable efforts that Reynolds employees participate in through the year, this activity is particularly meaningful because it helps kids appreciate working together to give something to others," said Trey Hiers, vice president of Corporate Marketing for Reynolds and Reynolds. "It's one more way Reynolds and our employees - along with their children - can support the community and the families whose parents are serving in the military."

Reynolds purchased the bicycles for the Bike Build from Huffy Corporation. Several Huffy employees from the quality assurance division volunteered Saturday and were on hand to help inspect the completed bicycles. Additionally, the City of Kettering Safety Section and the Safe Kids Coalition of Greater Dayton donated 100 bike helmets to be paired with the bicycles.

Last year, bikes from the Bike Build were donated to Wright-Patterson AFB families. The previous year, the bicycles were given to children of families of the Army National Guard, 371st Sustainment Brigade, headquartered next door to Reynolds in Kettering.
