PATRÓN HIGHCROFT'S BRABHAM
HONORED WITH BRITISH RACING
DRIVER'S CLUB AWARD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sir Jack and David Brabham [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102872439876&s=1707&e=001awT13UMBUdpO55kpLcNL_HfGO78KTEm6c0Zevvd7xrHUyh64968tkr9-zhk3VuI0NXSU3ueQHXVHqI-CjyMZx62VP-UfdX9bPirwv21ifA1qBNuKswO2FQ==]LONDON,
UK, Tuesday, December 8, 2009:Patrón
Highcroft Racing's David Brabham was honored for his outstanding performance in
the 2009 season at the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) Awards in London
yesterday.
The
UK-based Australian enjoyed his most successful career season in 2009, winning
his first American Le Mans Series championship with Patrón Highcroft Racing and
taking his first victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Peugeot.
Brabham
was awarded the BRDC Fairfield Trophy - the prize given for an outstanding
performance by a BRDC member in honor of Pat Fairfield, a highly-regarded
driver of the pre-war era. Fairfield lost his life in an accident during the
1937 Le Mans 24-Hour race.
"It
is a great honor to receive the BRDC Fairfield Trophy for outstanding
achievement," said Brabham.
"It's
been an unbelievable season where I was privileged to race with two fantastic
teams. Taking the ALMS title with Patrón Highcroft Racing and winning Le Mans
with Peugeot achieved two of my career-long goals in what was a very special
year for all of the family.
"Half
a century ago, my father won his first F1 crown and it's fantastic to be here
in Australia celebrating his remarkable achievements with the rest of the
family. I am sorry I couldn't be there at the BRDC awards to collect the award
but the Fairfield Trophy really is a fitting end to a memorable year. It means
a lot to receive this commendation from my peers."
Brabham
went close to making further additions to his trophy cabinet last weekend while
visiting his homeland and competing in final round of the MINI Challenge series
at the Homebush Olympic venue street circuit in Sydney.
Despite
never having driven the car prior to the weekend, Brabham was instantly on the
pace - finishing 4th, 6th and 4th in the three races.
"If
you thought it was hard winning the world's biggest race," Brabham told his
assembled rivals post-race, "try winning a MINI Challenge race with you guys.
It's harder than anyone realizes. I have had a tremendous time this weekend and
I can't thank you all enough."
The
Australian event headlined by the final round of the V8 Supercar Championship
also paid tribute to David's father Sir Jack Brabham who is celebrating the
50th anniversary of the first of his three Formula One titles.
In
addition to his MINI Challenge drive, David also got behind the wheel of a
Brabham BT6 for a parade lap alongside his nephew Matthew Brabham who drove a
Brabham BT24. Sir Jack Brabham joined the parade in an open-topped Aston Martin
DBS while David's sons Sam and Finn also joined their grandfather on the lap.
Matthew
Brabham is the third generation of racing Brabhams. The son of David's oldest brother
and fellow Le Mans 24 Hour
winner Geoff, Matthew graduated from karting to begin racing in Formula Ford
this year.
David
Brabham will return to action for Patrón Highcroft Racing after the festive
season when testing begins aboard the Honda Performance Development
factory-backed ARX-01c chassis.
After
recording seven victories for the team over the past three seasons, Brabham
will kick off the 2010 American Le Mans Series with a new co-driver expected to
be announced soon.
