Davidson, NC: Tiff Daniels, who most recently competed in NASCAR's Camping World Series East with the Drive for Diversity, will be setting her sites on South Africa in January. Daniels was one of only two women drivers invited to attend the four day event at the Phakisa Freeway Circuit, located southwest of Johannesburg in Welkom, South Africa. The event marks the second time that ASA (American Speed Association) has held a race outside the US, the first in Africa. They will be working closely with MSA (Motorsport South Africa) over the next four years as the exclusive international stock car racing organization for Phakisa Freeway.
The 207 lap (500 Kilometer) event will take place on the D-shaped oval on January 31, 2010 and represents the first competition of its kind. The event will be called, "Two Continents - One Winner," bringing together a select group of US drivers and the best of South Africa. The event is being heavily promoted in both South Africa and the US with television, radio, internet and print coverage.
The four day event will include an education day, media day, qualifying, and the championship race. The education day will bring school-aged children to Phakisa Freeway and allow them to meet the American and South African drivers.
"I am thrilled to have this opportunity. There is no better way to gain the experience I am seeking as a driver and also be immersed in such an amazing culture," said Daniels.
The young up and coming driver has been busy this season, not only with her race schedule but also with many public appearances. The mechanical engineering graduate is also a full-time engineer on Juan Pablo Montoya's #42 car in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series.
Daniels will leave for South Africa on January 25th, and will pilot the #19 Toyota, which will be wrapped in the colors of the South African flag in support of the country's World Cup soccer team. The car will have a color-schemed companion with car owner Marc Davis in the matching #96, to complete a two-team theme around 1996 - the year the South African soccer team won the AFCON games.
