GPS Navigation is a Vital Black Friday Shopping Tool According to Industry Leader Networks in Motion
Searches for Walmart, Sam's Club, Best Buy, and Toys R' Us See Huge Spike as Holiday Shoppers Use Mobile Navigation to Assist Their Shopping Experience
ALISO VIEJO, Calif., Nov. 25 -- Networks In Motion (NIM), the award-winning wireless navigation, hyper-local search and location-based services (LBS) company, that makes anywhere you go feel like home, today announced research findings that show Black Friday holiday shoppers show an astounding reliance on GPS Navigation as they travel from store to store to take advantage of various blowout savings. Shoppers use their navigation devices to search for stores, look at traffic information on the road, and make sure they get to their destination quickly enough to take advantage of the once-a-season deals.
With mobile navigation, users can search for stores or other points of interest, and their device will tell them where the stores are, and the quickest route to get there. On Black Friday, the list of most searched destinations is filled with the top shopping destinations in the country, and the stores with the best deals see a shocking increase of activity.
Shoppers who are looking to get all of their gifts in one place make Walmart the most searched destination on Black Friday by a significant margin. The department store giant has more than twice as many searches as second place on the list. Other shopping destinations in the top ten include Best Buy, Target, Circuit City, Sam's Club and Toys R' Us, with all of these potential gift centers drawing much more attention than normal. Searches for Best Buy last year increased by more than 400% on Black Friday, while searches for Toys R' Us and Sam's Club both increased by nearly 1000%.
Many seasoned Black Friday shoppers will not spend all their time in one store, but will instead travel to as many stores as possible to fulfill all their shopping needs. This is seen in navigation usage, as the average traveler on Black Friday had over 17 individual navigation sessions, which is an 85% increase from an average day. According to Networks In Motion, the average number of navigation sessions per person is expected to increase even more this coming Black Friday.
Another deciding factor in the increased navigation usage on Black Friday is the traffic functionality of mobile GPS devices. Many deals on Black Friday are only good while supplies last, so for holiday shoppers, time is truly of the essence. Even when travelers are going to stores where they know the location, they will often still use their GPS device so they can see where there is traffic, and potentially re-route around it. On Black Friday last year, users chose to re-route around traffic over 25,000 times, saving them countless minutes on the road.
"To take advantage of the best deals on Black Friday, shoppers need to travel to multiple stores, and it really is not a surprise that people turn to their mobile navigation devices to help them find their way," said Steve Andler, VP of Marketing at Networks In Motion. "We are thrilled that people are embracing mobile GPS, and think it's great that they are using our extensive search functions to always find exactly what they are looking for."
