Langdon shines in opening day action at Las Vegas, Lucas has work to do
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 30) -- Shawn Langdon continued to put a full-court press on his rookie-of-the-year campaign, qualifying a lofty fourth in a crowded field of 26 dragsters at the fourth annual Virginia NHRA Nationals. Langdon posted two great runs down The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the best of which put a 3.855 at 313.29 mph on the scoreboards.
"We're off to a good start, no doubt," said Langdon, who was cheered on all day by a large contingent of family and friends who made the drive over from his native Southern California. "It tried to knock the tires off in Round 2 when we were over there in the left lane but that lane got everyone. I was just glad we made it down with a good time (3.877) because now we have solid data for both lanes.
"It's always a plus to run well Friday and get solidly in the top half of the field. It allows you to push the limits of the track on Saturday and really find a good race day set-up. All around, I think we got a lot out of our Lucas Oil/Dixie Chopper dragster. Now we just need to get Morgan (Lucas) up to speed and we'll be fine."
Langdon's teammates and car owner, Morgan Lucas, struggled Friday in his GEICO Powersports/Lucas Oil dragster, never making it down the track under power.
"The weather is nice and cool and it's supposed to stay that way through tomorrow so we'll have two good chances to put a number up there," Lucas said. "The best part of having a two-car team is that we can go over to Shawn's side and look over their data to figure out what we need to do. There's no cause for concern just yet. We'll be fine."
Langdon, Lucas, and the rest of the Top Fuel contingent will close out professional qualifying with two Saturday sessions scheduled to begin at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m.
