OBERG FINISHES SEASON WITH MOMENTUM FOR 2010
Eagle River, WI (October, 28, 2009) - After his best weekend of the
year in Perris, Mike Oberg and his #80 AMSOIL BFGoodrich Tires Chevy
continued to build momentum for the 2010 season. The final round of
the year saw Mike take the gray and black PRO-2WD truck to a fifth
place finish. But that didn?t mean there wasn?t any drama during the
weekend.
The track layout was a typical TORC short track design with a
combination of fast high flying jumps and a great technical rhythm
section through the infield. The design was awesome, but the dry
desert soil was not. Friday night?s races had to be stopped a few
times to get the track watered, and have the dust settle. Undaunted,
the TORC track crew worked around the clock to improve track
conditions, and thanks to their perseverance, Saturday night?s series
finale was an awesome show.
After Friday?s practice session, Bill Schliepper from ProPower came
over to the Oberg pit to check on his customer?s engine. The
inspection found a problem with the valve train, so a rapid decision
was made to pull out the backup truck and prepare it for racing.
With five hours until race time, crew chief Cory Lambert and his
crew went to work, making suspension changes, and other adjustments to
get the ?07 Keith Stamper built chassis ready. Thanks to the swift
work, the team had Mike and his truck ready to race just as opening
ceremonies began.
FRIDAY ? ROUND 15
The use of the backup truck put Mike Oberg last, in the starting
grid of the fifteen-truck field. The first couple of laps of the race
saw Mike take a cautious approach to the race, getting a good feel of
the truck. Then just as the AMSOIL Chevy began to pass a few trucks,
the right front spindle broke coming down the front straightaway. This
ended the night with a fifteenth place finish.
Overnight, the team went to work replacing the spindle, and making
a few suspension adjustments, as well as the usual between rounds prep.
SATURDAY ? ROUND 16
The PRO-2WD race was the first PRO group to hit the track Saturday
night. Mike had his AMSOIL BFGoodrich Chevy starting well back in the
field, so he knew there would be much work ahead, for a solid finish.
Mike really stayed focused, made all the right moves and crossed the
finish line in fifth place. The finish he was looking for, happened.
This was the best finish of the season for the Northern Wisconsin
based team.
?The end of the year program really came alive,? commented Mike
Oberg. ?When BFGoodrich came on board, it was one of the keys to our
improvement, and the other was the assistance from a suspension
specialist. We knew we had a great ProPower engine and J & H
Transmission, but the final two pieces were put in place this fall and
it really showed. My guys never gave up, no matter what the situation
delivered; they always gave me the best possible ride. I?m really
looking forward to next season.?
For the year, Mike finished the 2009 Traxxas TORC Series presented
by AMSOIL PRO-2WD Championship in eighth place.
