SAN FRANCISCO, CA – October 27, 2009 – The San Francisco Chronicle|SFGate.com 52nd Annual International Auto Show, presented by AutoTrader.com, November 26 through December 2 at Moscone Center, will feature the largest display of classic cars in show history.

San Francisco's Academy of Art University Museum will exhibit approximately 30 cars from the 1930s. The classics were selected for the show by the University's Industrial Design Department Director Tom Matano.

“I picked the best examples of different European and American makers for the show,” Matano said. “My personal favorite is the French 1937 Delage. It is the most elegant car.”

Matano, a designer at Mazda for 20 years before joining the faculty at the University eight years ago, put together the exhibit based on compatibility of design, type and color. Slated to be included in the museum exhibit are: 1927 Minerva A1 32 CV Sport Sedan, 1927 Packard Model 343 Convertible Sedan,1929 Auburn Boattail Speedster, 1930 Duesenberg Dual Cowl Phaeton, 1931 Cadillac Convertible Coupe, 1931 Chrysler Imperial Club Sedan, 1931 Cord L29 Convertible Coupe,1931 Packard Model 840 Waterhouse Eight, 1931 Pierce Arrow Model 43 Club Sedan, 1932 Marmon Sixteen Convertible Sedan, 1932 Packard Model 902 Rumble Seat Coupe, 1933 Packard Model 1105 Touring Twelve, 1933 Rolls Royce Phantom II Newport Towncar, 1934 Cadillac V16 Aero Coupe, 1934 Lincoln Convertible, 1934 Packard Model 1108 Sport Phaeton 12, 1935 Duesenberg Murphy Convertible Coupe SJ, 1935 Pierce Arrow 12 Cylinder Coupe, 1936 Auburn 852 Cabriolet, 1936 Hispano Suiza J12 Convertible Victoria, 1937 Bugatti Type 57 Atalante Coupe, 1937 Delage DB-120 Aerosport Coupe, 1937 Lincoln Convertible Victoria Brumm, 1938 Buick Limited Series 80 Opera Brahm, 1938 Pierce Arrow 2 Door Convertible Coupe,1939 Buick Century Convertible Coupe, 1939 Lagonda LG6 Rapide.

Most, but not all of the collection is garaged in the museum of the university's Industrial Design Department on Van Ness Avenue. The museum collection ranges from a 1927 Packard to a 1992 Mercedes 500 SL. The most valuable is probably the 1934 Dusenberg. The cars were collected by Richard A. Stephens, son of the late Richard S. Stevens, who founded the Academy of Art University in 1929 and served as its president until 1951. The younger Stephens served as president until 1992, when he was succeed by his daughter, Elisa Stephens., and named Chair Emeritus.

Although Matano's department has one of the youngest automobile design programs in the country, in existence for just 10 years, the list of companies that have hired graduates is impressive: BMW Design, Works, GM, Mazda, Toyota, Fox Racing, Black & Decker, Camelback (CQ) Hasbro, Mattel Tigo, LG Electronics, Microsoft, Nike, tech stock companies NVIDIA and Palm Inc; Samsung, Tony, Sketchers North Face and Timbuk 2 Designs.
