Zipcar Estimates Global University Car-Sharing Membership Could Reach Millions, Saving 20+ Billion Dollars and Reducing CO2 Emissions by 6.5 Billion Tons per Year
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. 14, 2009 -- As hundreds of thousands of students returned to campus this fall, their school provided them with a set of wheels - Zipcar - in addition to room and board. Driven by approximately 75 percent growth year over year in the university segment, Zipcar already is on or near more than 140 campuses in North America and Great Britain, serving a total student population of more than one million in 25 cities, states and provinces. Based on current membership levels and using data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Zipcar estimates that its university programs currently reduce carbon emissions by nearly 56 million pounds annually, which is the equivalent emission of over 4,800 passenger vehicles. Extending the methodology used in a Zipcar global car-sharing study earlier this year, university car sharing has the potential to save more than 20 billion dollars for students and universities, and reduce CO2 emissions by 6.5 billion tons per year.
"I cannot say enough about our partnership with Zipcar; their commitment to innovation, marketing, and customer service has allowed us to create the type of brand awareness and customer loyalty that students identify with and respect. With over 20 cars and approximately 1000 members on campus - we are dedicated to continue growing our car-sharing program until our parking demand and environmental goals have been realized," said Tony Mazza, Director of Transportation for the University of Southern California (USC).
Zipcar is the largest provider of campus car sharing in the United States, and the leading choice for car sharing programs among colleges and universities. Zipcar's presence on colleges and universities extends from small liberal arts colleges to the largest public universities in the United States, Canada and United Kingdom.
"The demand for Zipcar at universities is being driven by a unique combination of university initiative and student demand. Increasingly, universities are under pressure to address parking and congestion issues, while also controlling costs and delivering on sustainability initiatives," said Scott Griffith, Chairman and CEO of Zipcar. "Universities acknowledge Zipcar as a convenient cost savings and carbon reduction solution. Zipcar provides students the freedom of car ownership - enhancing campus life by offering the ability to get off campus for errands, entertainment or road trips - without the associated cost and hassle of owning a car. More and more student assemblies and student governments are demanding that their campuses offer Zipcar."
Zipcar is well represented among several college athletic conferences, including:
-- Seven of the 10 schools in the Pac 10 -- Nearly half of the Big 10 and SEC -- Half of the Ivy League -- Most schools in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)
Among the key reasons why Zipcar is preferred by students and school officials across the country:
-- Brand: Zipcar has become a brand of choice for consumers, especially students. They see Zipcar, which consistently is ranked alongside other leading brands like Google, Apple and Twitter, as a brand that understands them. Several universities have contracted with Zipcar after student associations launched campaigns to bring Zipcar to campus. -- Technology: Zipcar is powered by the most sophisticated and mature car-sharing technology platform in the industry. For today's mobile-oriented students, Zipcar offers the most variety of access to its vehicles, via WAP, Bluetooth, and Blackberry. The Zipcar on the iPhone application is the first and only car-sharing technology of its kind. -- Member Experience: As a company with nearly 10 years of experience in offering car sharing, Zipcar has created an end-to-end system that makes it easy and fun to reserve and drive a Zipcar. -- Sustainability: The greenest campuses in the country choose Zipcar. Nine of the 15 colleges in the Princeton Review's 2010 Green Honor Roll feature Zipcar; of the top 20 schools on the Sierra Club's "Cool School" list, 10 offer Zipcar. Overall, Zipcar is on nearly half of the 50 campuses on the Sierra Club list. -- Insurance: Zipcar provides insurance to students as young as 18 at a range of colleges and universities. -- Zimride: Zipcar is the only provider to seamlessly integrate ride-sharing with car-sharing through its innovative partnership with Zimride, extending the cost savings, convenience and fun of both services.
"We envision a world where there are more car sharers than car owners," added Griffith. "The university environment will continue to allow the benefits of Zipcar to extend past the boundaries of major cities."
