Rentech and UOP Alliance for Deployment of Clean Synthetic Fuels Technologies Expanded to Include Synthesis Gas Cleaning

LOS ANGELES--Rentech, Inc. (NYSE AMEX: RTK) announced today that it has expanded its alliance with UOP LLC, a Honeywell company. The companies currently cooperate to market integrated technology solutions for the production of liquid products from synthesis gas (syngas) in projects that combine the patented Rentech Process based on Fischer-Tropsch chemistry with UOP’s upgrading technology for production of finished products, including synthetic jet and diesel fuels.

The expanded agreement follows Rentech’s acquisition of SilvaGas Corporation, which added biomass gasification to Rentech’s product offerings. Rentech now offers an integrated solution for production of synthetic fuels from biomass feedstocks. A critical step in that process is the conditioning and clean-up of syngas produced by the Rentech-SilvaGas biomass gasifier. Under the expanded alliance with UOP, Rentech will now combine its own patent-pending technologies for syngas conditioning and tar removal with UOP’s technologies for removal of sulfur and separation of carbon dioxide to prepare the syngas for entry into the Rentech Process and UOP’s hydrocracking and hydrotreating technologies for production of finished products. The companies will cooperate to market the integrated solution for production of synthetic fuels from biomass feedstocks, in addition to the fossil-based technologies that formed the basis for the original alliance.

“Rentech is pleased to expand our alliance with UOP, strengthening our joint product offerings as a complete solution for syngas conditioning and clean-up, conversion and product upgrading. Our proven technologies jointly offer an integrated technology solution for the production of ultra-clean, drop-in fuels from a range of biomass and fossil resources,” commented Richard Penning, Rentech’s Executive Vice President of Technology and Commercial Affairs.

As commercialization partners, Rentech and UOP expect to increase their market reach by jointly offering proven technologies that can produce ultra-clean synthetic fuels that are cleaner than traditional petroleum-derived fuels.

“Our goal has been to provide a one-stop solution for producers to convert syngas into high-quality, ultra-clean transportation fuels and high-value chemicals,” said UOP Refining Business Director Ashis Banerji. “UOP’s high-performance gas processing technologies are proven worldwide and this alliance will further enhance our ability to support production of ultra-clean fuels.”
