Short track drama for Tim George Jr.
With so many cars packed together on a half-mile bullring, racing on a short track
can sometimes be a bigger gamble than hitting the slot machines in Las Vegas. Saturday
night's Kentuckiana Ford Dealers ARCA Fall Classic 200 at Salem Speedway proved
that to be true with only two cars ending the race on the lead lap. On track incidents
eliminated much of the competition, including two separate run-ins with lapped traffic
for Tim George Jr.
George Jr., driving the No. 2 Ruby Tuesday Toyota, entered the 200-lap event on
the .555-mile track with momentum riding high following a top five finish the last
time out on the road course in New Jersey. He and his Jon Wolfe-led pit crew looked
to Salem to continue their climb and the team proved to be well on their way after
qualifying 15th for the start of the race.
"We had a pretty good run in qualifying going, and should have been in the top 10.
I got loose coming to the white flag and that was the lap, but it was still good
enough for 15th," George Jr. said of his run.
Shortly after the green flag fell on the race however, the racing intensified with
the leader quickly lapping cars. As George Jr. dug in and looked to maneuver his
way through the traffic, his Eddie Sharp Racing teammate Craig Goess and another
car got together. With nowhere to go on the track in order to evade the melee, George
Jr.'s Toyota was also caught up in the wreck.
The team made repairs to the damaged Ruby Tuesday sponsored machine but once back
on track, trouble again found the determined George Jr.
"The car was okay in the race, but a little tight off of turn 2. Short track racing
is a lot about being at the right place at the right time. I was behind my teammate
Craig and he got into our old teammate Steve [Arpin]. It looked like they both got
hooked together, and I couldn't get slowed down soon enough. We made repairs, and
were out running competitive times again. Unfortunately, a lapped car got into the
back of me and that was the end of our day," added George Jr.
At the end of the 200-lap race, George Jr. was shown in the 22nd position.
With a week off from competition, George Jr. will next climb behind the wheel of
his familiar No. 2 Ruby Tuesday Toyota and hit the track on Thursday, October 1st
at Kansas Speedway.
