Short Day in Charlotte has Anderson Determined to Bounce Back
Â
Event: Â Carolina NHRA Nationals
Location: zMAX Dragway, Concord, North Carolina
Day/Date: Sunday, September 20, 2009
Â
The magnificent zMAX Dragway is a ten-minute drive from Summit Racing Pontiac racer Greg Anderson’s Concord, NC home. However, during Sunday’s final eliminations of the Carolinas NHRA Nationals, there was certainly no evidence of a home track advantage, as the three-time champion’s day ended in the opening stanza.
Â
After battling to adapt his car to the track in qualifying, where he finished an uncharacteristic 11th, the KB Racing driver  entered race day determined to return to his winning ways in the first round against veteran Greg Stanfield.  Unfortunately, even though he was able to gain the slight edge at the starting line and make his best run of the weekend at 6.645 seconds, 209.30 mph, in one of the closest races of the day the effort fell an agonizing one thousandth of a second shy of holding off his opponent’s 6.638-second charge.
Â
With less than one week before the next race in Dallas, Anderson immediately started working on a way to regain the consistency necessary to contend for wins and the championship.
Â
“Naturally, I’m disappointed by our showing this weekend,?? said Anderson. “It certainly wasn’t what
we were expecting coming into our home track. We just seem to have lost the handle on our race car. We made a total of five runs, and it never really responded the way we wanted it to. On top of that, today we miss winning the round by one thousandth of a second when there was no way we should have lost. I guess you could say it was just one of those weekends.
Â
“But we’re not about to dwell on it or throw in the towel. We are going to keep trying, chipping away at it until we get things turned around and put this Summit Racing Pontiac back in the winner’s circle. We have a couple days before the next race in Dallas, and we’re going to be putting in some long hours trying to figure out how to get this horse back running the way it should.??
