The Knaub's (Husband and Wife) Both Win at SSP on Saturday Night; Track Champions Crowned

Newberrytown, PA (September 19, 2009) - Dover's Gene Knaub won the 25-lap Late Model feature on Saturday night at the Susquehanna Speedway Park. Orrtana's Marshall McMullen claimed his third Street Stock feature event of the season. Jason Zook bested the Xtreme Stock Car field in the 20-lap feature. York's Lucas Montgomery won the 15-lap nearly non-stop Legends Cars feature event. York Haven's Daryl Sipe wired the field in the 10-lap Road Warrior feature. Kendra Knaub of Dover won the XSC Rookie Rumble race.

Jake Jones of Shermansdale claimed his first SSP Late Model track Championship over Dover's Justin Ehrhart by 22 points. Scott Thunberg of Myerstown won his second SSP Street Stock Track Championship by a mere nine points over Jim Palm Jr. of Loysville. Thunberg's last championship came in 1998. In another hard fought season-long battle, Windsor's Sam Rial edged out York's Travis Horan by 19 points in the Xtreme Stock Car Track Championship. Rial has also competed in every Xtreme Stock Car point's race since its inception in 2004 (113 races).

Charles Potts also has claimed the distinction of claiming the 2 millionth dollar in purse monies given out by Todd and Rhonda Fisher since the purchased the Susquehanna Speedway Park at the beginning of 2004.

The 25-lap Late Model feature began with Smoke Christine grabbing the early lead over Alex Updegraff. On lap four, Christine spun after getting high in turn three and four, relinquishing the top spot to Updegraff. On a lap 12 restart, third place runner, Charles Potts passed both Updegraff and John Moser Jr. on the high side in turn one to take over the lead. Eleventh place starter, Gene Knaub followed the same route as Potts to take over second place on the same restart. On lap 16, Knaub wrestled the lead from Potts to go on to win the 25-lap feature event. Potts finished second despite a slight miss in the engine at the later stages of the race. Moser also developed mechanical issues at the end, but held on for the third place podium finish. A solid run for Steve Billet finished fourth with Updegraff in fifth. Knaub, Updegraff and Christine won the qualifying heats. Jake Lettich won the consolation race.

Calvin Herman led the first four circuits of the 20-lap Street Stock feature until Marshall McMullen took the lead on lap six. After the yellow flew five more times in the final 13 laps, McMullen held onto the lead despite heavy pressure from Jim Palm Jr. McMullen took the victory over Palm at the end wit Greg Diehl finishing third, followed by Randy Zechman and Garrett Shover. Rookie star Brett Pickel and McMullen won the qualifying heat races.

Larry Hughes Jr. led the first three laps in the Xtreme Stock Car main event until he spun by himself in turn four coming to the completion of the fourth lap. On the restart, Tommy Slanker took over the top spot until twelfth place started Jason Zook moved by Slanker on the seventh lap. Slanker stayed close but was unable to regain the top spot in lapped traffic. Zook collected his first XSC win over Slanker and Travis Horan. Sam Rial and Matt Adams rounded out the top five. Patrick McClane, Slanker and Horan were qualifying heat race winners.

Denny Willey led lap 1 of the 15 laps in the Legends Cars feature. Lucas Montgomery led laps 2 through 15 to claim the victory. Reed Saloney charged from 11th to finish second. Jason Rochelle, Brian Weitzel and Greg Burd rounded out the top five. Weitzel and Montgomery won the qualifying heat races.
