The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series will be hosting a teleconference
next Tuesday to provide driver access for media covering the 2009 NHRA
playoffs, the Countdown to 1:
 
* WHAT: A teleconference featuring some of the prominent drivers/riders in
the Countdown to 1, NHRA¹s six-race playoff.
 
* RACES IN NHRA¹S 6-RACE PLAYOFF, THE COUNTDOWN TO 1:
> * Second annual NHRA Carolinas Nationals at Concord, N.C. (Sept. 17-20)
> * 24th annual O¹Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals at Ennis, Tx.
> (Sept. 24-27) 
> * 22nd annual O¹Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, Tn. (Oct. 2-4)
> * Fourth annual NHRA Virginia Nationals at Richmond, Va. (Oct. 9-11)
> * Ninth annual  NHRA Las Vegas Nationals at Las Vegas, Nev. (Oct. 29-Nov. 1)
> * 45th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals at Pomona, Calif. (Nov. 12-15)

> sweeping the Western Swing, been to a category-best eight final rounds and he
> boasts an impressive 36-17 record on the tree (first off the starting line).
> * TONY SCHUMACHER, U.S. ARMY DRAGSTER (3rd place, 2070 POINTS): The winner of
> six Top Fuel world championships ­ including the last five in a row ­ begins
> the 2009 playoffs in third place. He¹s won four races this season, including
> his Top Fuel-record-tying eighth win at the just-completed Mac Tools U.S.
> Nationals. Schumacher is the defending champion at the NHRA Carolinas
> Nationals. 
 
FUNNY CAR
> * TONY PEDREGON, Q HORSEPOWER CHEVY IMPALA (1ST place, 2110 POINTS): The
> two-time NHRA Full Throttle Series world champion (2004, 2007) ­ and second
> winningest Funny Car driver (43 wins) in NHRA history ­ enters the playoffs in
> first place. He won three times and had four runner-ups in a turbulent regular
> season that saw him part ways with longtime crew chief Dickie Venables (who¹s
> now tuning eighth-place Del Worsham¹s car). He boasts a category-best 39-10-1
> record on the tree (first off the starting line).
> * RON CAPPS, NAPA AUTO PARTS DODGE CHARGER R/T (2nd place, 2080 points):
> Renowned as the winningest Funny Car to have never won a championship, Ron
> Capps and crew chief Ed ³Ace² McCulloch may have their best chance in 2009.
> The tandem have won a category-best five races to raise Capps¹ career win
> total in Funny Car to 29, one shy of the legendary Kenny Bernstein for fourth
> place on the all-time list.
 
PRO STOCK
> * JEG COUGHLIN, JEGS.COM CHEVY COBALT (1st place, 2110 points): The four-time
> ­ and two-time defending ­ NHRA Full Throttle Series champion is back in
> position to contend for another championship. Coughlin led all drivers with
> seven regular season wins, including the last two regular of the regular
> season to cement the No. 1 seed in Pro Stock. Coughlin has a category-leading
> 42-16 record on the tree (leaving the starting line first) this season,
> enhancing his profile as the most clutch driver in the class.
 
PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE
> * EDDIE KRAWIEC, SCREAMIN¹ EAGLE VANCE & HINES HARLEY-DAVIDSON (1st place,
> 2110 points): The defending champion in the two-wheel class will start the
> 2009 playoffs in a much better position than he did a year ago when he
> finished the regular season in seventh place. Krawiec reached eight final
> rounds in the 12 PSM regular season races and he won a category-best four
> times.
