As School Year Begins, Growing Concern Over An American Teen Public Health Epidemic

DESCRIPTION: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in America. U.S. News & World Report's National Issues Briefing, in association with Allstate Insurance Company, will evaluate existing federal and state laws regarding teen driving as well as legislative, safety and educational measures that are needed to improve driving safety and its allied behavioral issues. The panel will examine minimum standards for state graduated licensing systems, supervised practice during the learning stage, nighttime driving, cell phone restrictions and enforcement of seat belt laws. The Briefing will also address practical efforts that will contribute to safer teen driving and improve our understanding of the significant health burden of motor vehicle fatalities among adolescents.
