Martin Turns Up The Heat at Chicagoland
Chicago, IL: Hal 'the Ragin' Cajun' Martin driver of the #4 Sea Support Ventures/Cunningham Motorsports Dodge blazed through the field at the Ansell Cut Protection 150 at Chicagoland Speedway bringing home 3rd place in only his second start in the ARCA RE/MAX Series.
After a strong day of practice on Thursday, Martin knew he had a fast car heading into qualifying. Unfortunately practice was cancelled due to rain on Friday morning so the team could not put new tires on the car to make a mock qualifying run. When Martin went out to qualify on Friday afternoon the car was extremely loose. Coming into turn three Martin knew he was going to lose control of the car. With quick thinking Martin was able to keep the car off the wall and bring it in with no damage.
The team took advantage of the time after qualifying to put new tires on and tighten up the car so Martin would be able to have a smooth run.
Once the green flag waved in only lap one Martin had moved into 28th. He was moving forward with a vengeance and had reached the top ten by lap twenty-two and broke into the top five by lap 47. On lap 95 there was a caution and Martin prepared himself for a green and white checkered flag finish. When the flag waved Martin passed on the outside before hitting the start line in 2nd place. Battling with a tight car, Martin fought hard to hold onto position but slipped back to third in turn three was having difficulty with a tight car but was still able to finish strong in 3rd place.
"We had an unbelievable day. I knew we had a strong car and the plan was to take our time. Once we were able to get clear we just went for it, picking off cars one by one. This is the most fun I have ever had behind the wheel," said Martin.
Martin is heading to Kansas Speedway on Tuesday for the open ARCA test.
Team Owner Kerry Scherer is looking forward to having Martin back in the car. "He was awesome! It was an exciting race and he did a great job."
The Ragin' Cajun will be back on the track racing on September 19 when he heads to Iowa Speedway to race again with Lorz Motorsports in the ASA Late Model Series.
