PLACERVILLE, CA – Following a wild night of competition Saturday night, the official point standings have been tallied and posted by Handy Racing Promotions Inc. The newest digits clearly illustrate that the 2009 Red Hawk Casino Championship titles are far from being decided with just one night of racing left in the season next Saturday night.
Â
In the sprint car division, defending champion Colby Wiesz of Colfax continues to lead the standings in a season that has been one of challenging lengths for the Bullet Racing Team and defending owner champion John Taylor. Despite the lack of a feature victory, Wiesz has had six top five finishes this season and has held the lead position for much of the year.
This Saturday night, Wiesz leads the division by 23 points and must make the A-feature to clinch that championship title. C.J. Humphreys of Placerville has moved into the second position in the point standings. Humphreys overtook Placerville’s Scott Russell this past Saturday night after both drivers had their share of misfortune through the night. Humphreys is 23-points out of the lead while Russell is 28 digits from the top spot. Andy Forsberg of Auburn is fourth ahead of Shingle Springs’ Justin Johnson.
In the Limited Late Model-Pro Stock division, Jerry Bartlett of Yuba City continued to lead the point standings. This past week Bartlett suffered a damaging crash in the opening lap of the feature event that left him with a last place finish in the event. Bartlett, fortunately, took the initial green for the race but was out for the remainder of the race which left him with an 11-point margin over defending champion Dan Brown Jr. of Nevada City. In one night of racing a driver can tally as many as 45-points towards the championship.
Jay Norton of Shingle Springs is third in the standings, 60 points from the top. Forryst Carnett is fourth, 84 points out of the lead. John Krehbiel of Placerville rounds out the top five entering the final night of action next Saturday night.
Saving the best for last, the Pure Stock division has the tightest championship battle of the year. Former champion Tom Tilford of Citrus Heights posted his eighth win of the season Saturday night and now leads the division by only 8-points over Chico’s Heather Bartlett. Both drivers have raced hard for the title all season long and, as predicted, this championship is going down to the last lap of the last race of the year.
Rick Grunert of Woodland is third in the standings, 90-points out of the lead. Eddie Gardner of Sacramento is fourth followed by Danielle Clauson of Placerville and John Hollowhornbear of Shingle Springs.
This coming Saturday night, Placerville Speedway will officially close the 2009 Red Hawk Casino Championship season with a finale that will go down in history as one of the closest chases for the championship in recent time and the first one since Handy Racing Promotions Inc. took management of the facility. Track promoter Alan Handy and his entire staff would like to thank all of the teams, fans and sponsors for their great support of the season. Come out this Saturday night and show your support of El Dorado County’s only professional spectator sport.
Gates open at 5 p.m. followed by qualifying at 6:30. Further information can be found at www.placervillespeedway.com Official point standings after Saturday’s event are now posted.
