LAST YEAR'S READING CHAMP BECKMAN READY TO REPEAT
NORCO, Calif. (Aug. 20, 2009) - Now that he's safely in the Countdown to 1
playoffs in the Funny Car class, "Fast" Jack Beckman is aiming to win his
third NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series national event of the year and
make it two in a row at this weekend's 25th annual NHRA Nationals at Maple
Grove Raceway, just outside of Reading, Pa.
Driving the Valvoline/Mail Terminal Services Dodge Funny Car for Don
Schumacher Racing, Beckman is eager to return to the winner's circle, and
welcomes the opportunity to compete in two back-to-back events. He's fresh
off a semifinal finish in Brainerd, Minn., last Sunday, and is eager to get
back to racing.
"Can't wait," he said. "One of the upsides of back-to-back races is, if you
stumble, you have a chance to pick yourself up and go vindicate. And if
you're doing well you've got a chance to get back out there and attack while
the iron is hot. And I think (crew chief) Johnny West and the Valvoline/MTS
crew have found some things that should help us throughout the rest of the
year. So I can't wait to get back out there.
"As the defending champ, it's always nice to have a chance to go back and
make it two in a row," added Beckman, who stands fourth in the rankings and
in Brainerd clinched a spot in the Countdown to 1 playoffs, which begin for
the top 10 following the U.S. Nationals on Labor Day weekend for the final
six events.
Mail Terminal Services continues its popular "Mail From Home" campaign in
2009, supporting the U.S. troops serving in the war zones. In the past two
NHRA seasons the campaign has sent over 195,000 post cards overseas signed
by fans and supporters at each NHRA national event with messages of support
for the troops, along with numerous NHRA National Dragster issues and other
automotive magazines. Photos of cars and drivers were also included.
In 2009 the "Mail From Home" program has been challenged to exceed the
previous records of cards distributed to hit a 120,000-card record for one
season.
