Anderson Adapts to the Conditions, Qualifies Third in Brainerd
Â
Event: Â Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals
Location: Brainerd International Raceway, Brainerd, Minnesota
Day/Date: Saturday, August 15, 2009
Â
For the second consecutive day, the Pro Stock teams attempting to qualify for the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals faced challenging conditions, as temperatures dropped by almost twenty degrees, which, combined with the heavy cloud cover, required a completely different set-up than the day before.  Calling on their extensive tuning library, Greg Anderson and his Summit Racing team made the necessary changes, using the more favorable conditions to slice four hundredths off his time from Friday, with the resultant 6.708-second, 204.91 mph pass eventually placing him third after persistent showers washed out the fourth and final qualifying session. Although disappointed by the lack of a final attempt, the Duluth, MN native was still confident his team was in a good position to earn their second win at Brainerd International Raceway on Sunday.
Â
“It would have been nice to get that last run, because we would have been able to run under conditions similar to what is forecast for tomorrow,?? said Anderson. “But, it’s the same for everybody, so we’ll have to go off of what we learned on our run today, planning for cooler weather, basically using the changes we had made for tonight,
hoping we made the right guess.
Â
“I had said yesterday I wasn’t quite happy with our runs, and we made a minor step forward today, although not as big as we need, so we’ll keep making changes trying to make the cars faster. We did get Jason’s (teammate Line) a little better, which was our main concern, so we seem to have both Summit Racing Pontiacs on the right track.Â
Â
“I think that by tomorrow we’ll have a great chance to win the Nationals here in Brainerd, and I know both Jason and I really want to win here. I haven’t won yet this year, and as much as I love racing here, there’s not a better place to get my first one for 2009, and I know it would mean the world to him. If we can put these two Summit cars in the final as we did at the last race, it will be the best day we’ve had all year, and the one that would mean the most to us. We’re looking for a big day tomorrow, so we’re going to go to the hotel, get some rest and come back ready to make some smart decisions.??
Â
Incidentally, Anderson and Summit Racing teammate Jason Line will start their day on Sunday by appearing on the set of the NHRA magazine show RaceDay, which will air from 11:00 – 11:30 a.m. (Eastern) on ESPN2.
