FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
: Amputee Michael Roman Establishes a New
World Land Speed Record at Bonneville Salt Flats Speed Weeks
Amputee and chronic pain patient Michael Roman heightening awareness of
chronic pain Land Speed Records
Wendover, Utah (August 14, 2009) After over 30 major surgeries and four progressive
amputations of his right leg in an attempt to manage my phantom limb pain, chronic pain
patient Michael Roman knows a lot about perserverance. Dedicated to raising the
awareness of chronic pain sufferers and educating them on the importance of pain
specialists, Roman and his team achieved his goal of establishing a new World Land
Speed Record today in the J/GL Class at the famed Bonneville Salt Flats course during
the 2009 SCTA Speed Weeks event.
Driving a custom-built closed cockpit Lakester race car powered by a 750cc Suzuki
GSXR motorcyle powerplant, Roman established a new SCTA Bonneville Speed Weeks
Land Speed Record in the J/GL Gas class by averaging 165.127 miles per hour over his
two runs over the three mile Bonnevile course.
-breaking speed run came on his third attempt at backing up his
successful record breaking qualifying runs for the third straight day and came a little
over six weeks after establishing a J/GL Class Record at Maxton in the June ECTA
trials. At the Bonneville Speed Weeks event, participants are not recognized as record
holders until their record-breaking qualifying runs are validated the following morning by
a record-breaking backup run that allows a record to be established from the average of
the qualifying and backup runs which must exceed the actual record speed. While
competitive speed trials have been held at the Bonneville Salts Flats since 1912, the
SCTA organization celebrates it sixtieth year of Speed Weeks competition at the
this magnificent event which is full of immense history, I became further educated about

Following numerous surgeries which ultimately caused Roman to lose his right leg from
the hip down, Roman exhausted all pain treatment options, including powerful pain
medications, drug pumps and single-source spinal cord stimulation (SCS) therapy. In
2005, he was successfully treated by a pain specialist with a new generation of SCS
therapy, Boston Scien -source spinal cord stimulation system. He
has since eliminated pain medications from his daily regimen. Now dedicated to helping
others who suffer from chronic pain, Roman works to shorten the amount of time it takes
chronic pain sufferers to find a pain management solution.
