Bryce Miller - Road America preview
Bryce Miller will return to the site of his first American Le Mans Series
victory this week, driving the No. 87 Marquis Jet / IPC Systems Porsche 911
GT3 RSR at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. The Summit, N.J., driver
combined with Dirk Werner of Kissenbrück, Germany, and Richard Westbrook of
London, England, to win the GT2 class with Farnbacher Loles Racing last
year.
Miller will alternate stints in this Sunday's two-hour 45-minute race with
Porsche factory driver Wolf Henzler of Nürtingen, Germany. Both drivers
carry the momentum of racing in the Total 24 Hours of Spa – more than eight
times the distance they will cover this week. Miller earned a second-place
GT2 finish in the July 25 race, his first on the daunting Spa Francorchamps
circuit in Belgium.
"Road America is one of my favorite circuits – maybe my favorite, until I
found Spa," Miller said. "It's really high-speed and the RSR is fun to drive
there, especially because of the assistance that the Porsche's extra
aerodynamics lends to the performance of the car at a high-speed circuit
like that. It's good to be going back after having won there last year."
The 2008 four-hour race ended at dusk, challenging drivers and crews to
optimize car setups as the track cooled and temperatures dropped. Miller
believes this year's early start and shorter distance could contribute to an
exciting race.
"I think it makes it easier to have a shorter race. There is some guesswork
for the teams when the track temperature drops and it can be difficult to
determine what the tire pressures should be as we're nearing the end of the
race. It's a benefit for the team and drivers to not have to deal with those
factors," he explained. "But when you have larger margins to make errors in,
that's one more opportunity for someone to step out and gain an advantage.
So it will probably make for some pretty close racing."
