All-Summit Final Nets Anderson a Runner-Up Finish in Sonoma

Summit Racing Pontiac driver Greg Anderson came to Sonoma in search of a get healthy weekend, as he looked to return to the race-winning form for which he is so well known.  He got off to a great start, as he earned his fourth No. 1 qualifying position of the season and sixth at Infineon Raceway.  Things continued to go according to plan for the three-time champion on race day, as he used a series of strong runs to defeat Ben Watson, Kurt Johnson and Rickie Jones in the early rounds advancing to the 84th final round of his career, second of the 2009 season and sixth in Sonoma.

 

The final obstacle between Anderson and his first national event win of the season was a familiar sight – his KB Racing teammate Jason Line, who, in a somewhat ironic twist, was driving the same Summit Pontiac Anderson had used to score six wins in 2008.  Although he was able to record a quick 6.632-second, 208.71 mph pass, it fell just shy of overcoming his stable mate’s starting line advantage, who used an equally strong 6.639-second, 208.33 mph run to gain the narrow victory.  Despite the initial disappointment, Anderson was still pleased with his team’s success, and confident his strong sh
owing would be the springboard he had been looking for.

 

“It was a great day for the Summit Racing team, and pretty close to a great day for me,�?? said Anderson.  “But this is definitely a team sport, and this performance will get this KB Racing crew fired up and motivated for the next two weeks as we try to make a better product for when we get to Brainerd.

 

“But that’s not the only good news.  I had been telling everybody that I needed something good to happen to me, and I think it happened today.  I had a good day and even a little bit of luck, so my spirits are up.  I made a slight mistake in the final, but we were racing our teammate, so it worked out okay.  Besides, Jason is driving the wheels off that car this year, and he was certainly deserving of the win.  I don’t mind one bit losing to him.

 

“Even so, this was the best day I’ve had all year, and I hope it will be the turning point in my season, so that I can go into Brainerd and drive as well as Jason did today.  It felt good – I hadn’t had that final round feeling for some time, and it’s definitely where I need to be, so we’ll keep digging.  If we have cars as good as we had out here, which I fully expect we will, this Summit crew will again be a threat for the race win, and I know it’s just a matter of time before it will be our turn in
the winner’s circle.�??
