Goewey and Yetman See Checkers Too

West Lebanon, NY: Hot summer nights at the Valley of Speed have been few and far between this season. By as the red hot sun began its descent into the western hills, it was very clear that the weather was not going to be a part of the racing program.

The first order of business was to complete the held over rain delayed Freihofer’s Baking Budget Sportsman 20 lap feature event from July 18th. It is very clear from the start that the full field of 26 cars were going to have their hands full.

But by lap 3, the #1 of Jason Harrington took control of the head of the field, and never looked back. Don Miller was scored 2nd, Kevin Ward, Scott Duell, and Brian Peterson completed the top 5.

Later on in the evening, Harrington came right back and was awarded the victory in the 2nd 20 lap Budget Sportsman Feature event after the #77 was DQ’d for illegal carburetor spacers. Kevin Ward, Don Miller, Michael Sabia, and Joe Carnibucci completed the top 5 finishers.

NBT Bank, Hein’s Auto Car, and Adirondack Tire then began their program of events that was nothing short of a barn burner. The excitement was nothing short of hair raising as 27 Modified took to the speedway for their 30 lap feature event.

Rich Salisbury took control early over the #87 of Hector Stratton in the event, but Stratton wanted the point, and took it on lap 4. But caution flew for the #518 of Kyle Sheldon. On the restart, Stratton again pulled out to a comfortable lead, but on his tail was the #55K of the King Fish, Mike King.

Everything change on lap 8 as Stratton’s #87 slowed in turn 4 and pulled pitside with mechanical issues. That left the #55K to take aver the hot seat with just 9 circuits completed on the Kokosa Oil lap counter.

The show wasn’t over quite yet as the big guns were coming. Last weeks winner Kenny Tremont Jr, Andy Bachetti, Donnie Corellis, and Eddie Marshall were all making their way through the field to get a shot at the #55K.

Caution flew on lap 10 for heavy contact between the #34B of Bachetti, the #57 of Corellis, and the #98 of Marshall, forcing the #98 into the outside wall and ending his night. Back at the front, King was still in command with the #60 of Brian Berger hot on his heals waiting to pounce with the slightest mistake.

But before that could happen, Tremont powered his #115 by and jumped into the runner up position. But even with 2 late race cautions, Tremont tried every which way to get past King, but the #55K was on target to score just his 2nd career Modified win at the Valley of Speed.

The extremely excited King takes the checkers with Tremont right on his heels. Berger crossed the line for a strong 3rd. 4th was Corellis, followed by Donnie Ackner.

The Sportsman 20 lap feature event was next up on the docket. Jeff Kelly brought the field to thee green and took control of the top spot early. But Kelly’s lead was relatively sort lived as the #2 of K.C. Goewey shot into the 2nd spot by lap 5, and then began dogging the #44 for the lead. By lap 11, Goewey charged out front and took over the front of the field.

The only caution flew on lap 15 but it nearly just delayed the inevitable. The #2 of K.C. Goewey scores the win at the checkers, with Danny Sanchez hot in his tracks. 3rd was Kelly, followed by Kyle Armstrong, and Alan Houghtaling to complete the top 5.

The Pro Stock feature event was not short of it’s excitement as well, as the #7 of Rob Yetman took control of the lead from his inside pole starting position by lap 8 from the #35 of Rick Dempsey. By lap 9, the #8 of Jay Corbin rolled into the runner up spot and began hounding Yetman for the lead.

Even with a few more cautions just to make it interesting, Corbin just could not make it stick, as Rob Yetman returns to victory lane. Corbin was 2nd, followed by Kevin Arnold, Paul LaRochelle, and Rick Dempsey completing the top 5.

Paul Engwer scored the win in the Limited Pro Stock division.

The Pure Stock division was in full force as well with 46 strong in 3 events. The winning drivers were: PS#1 - Jason Meltz, PS#2 - Ray Hall Sr, and PS#3 - Al Relyea.

Next on the schedule is the return of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series on Sunday July 26th presented by Carquest and Castrol Oil. Also on tap will be the Benjamin Moore Paints 358 Super Series Syracuse 150 Qualifier. Last minute tickets are still available, but they are 1st come 1st serve!
