Union Talks with GM Ongoing
DETROIT, July 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- IUE-CWA and Steelworker negotiations with General Motors are intensifying as the unions push hard to mitigate the company's plan to cut off health insurance for tens of thousands of retirees.
The situation was further complicated Wednesday when Delphi surrendered its hourly pension plan to the federal government's Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation. The action could mean that thousands of retirees will take a double hit of severely reduced pensions as well as loss of health coverage.
"We are extremely concerned about the status of our retirees and are working hard to come to some resolution," said IUE-CWA President Jim Clark. "We are fighting for some success, because within this legal structure, there can be no real victory or justice."
The unions will not release any details on the discussions until they are completed.
