Montoya to drive "Retro" Target Paint Scheme at the Brickyard
Juan Pablo Montoya's No. 42 Target Chevrolet, Firesuit and Helmet All to
Sport Look of 2000 Indianapolis 500 Winning Paint Scheme
for This Year's Brickyard 400
Indianapolis, IN. (July 24, 2009) - Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix
Sabates and Target today announced that the No. 42 Target Chevrolet of
Juan Pablo Montoya will feature a "Retro" Target paint scheme for the
Brickyard 400 this weekend as a tribute to Montoya's 2000 Indianapolis
500 win in 2000. His 2009 Brickyard 400 Cup car and firesuit will
feature the famed gold lightning bolts similar to those on his IndyCar
and firesuit when he last raced for Target on the famed oval back in
2000.
Notes of Interest:
* The Bolt Returns to Indy: Montoya returns to the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway in the same Target colors for the first time since he won
the Indianapolis 500 for Target and Chip Ganassi in 2000. Chip Ganassi
Racing and Target have a solid history at the famed oval. As an owner
Ganassi has won at the track three times (Emerson Fittipaldi - 1989,
Montoya - 2000 and Scott Dixon - 2008) and Target has been the sponsor
for two of those (2000 and 2008).
* Target Celebrates 20th Season with Ganassi: The team's
partnership with Target continues to rank as one of the longest
continuous relationships in motorsports. Chip Ganassi created his own
one-car IndyCar team in 1990 and that same year established a
partnership with Target. Today, Target remains the only full-time
sponsor in both the NSCS and the IndyCar Series. With Montoya and his
IndyCar Series teammates Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti, Team Target
now sports three drivers that have all won open-wheel championships and
the Indianapolis 500.
* Indianapolis 500 Winner: Montoya took the checkered flag in his
first and only attempt at the Indianapolis 500 in 2000 driving for
Target Chip Ganassi Racing. He dominated the field from the start as he
led 167 of the 200 laps and finished 7.184 seconds ahead of the number
two finisher. He also became the first rookie since Graham Hill in 1966
to win The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
* A familiar place: Juan Pablo Montoya made history in 2007 by
becoming the first driver to have competed in all three major events at
the Indianapolis Motor Speedway: He has participated in the Indianapolis
500 (IndyCar), the United States Grand Prix (Formula One) and the
Allstate 400 at the Brickyard (NASCAR). Montoya has six starts in the
Grand Prix, with two starts at the Brickyard 400 and one in the
Indianapolis 500. Should Montoya win, he would become the first driver
in history to win both the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400.
Quoteboard:
Juan Pablo Montoya:
"There are a number of things that I am pleased with so far this year
and driving for Target again is one of them. I am also really excited
about driving the Target car with the paint scheme that I used back in
2000 when I drove for Target here in the Indy 500. To wear the firesuit
and drive the car will bring back a lot of great memories for me."
Chip Ganassi:
"Target has meant so much to me, both professionally and personally over
our 20 year relationship and to be able to celebrate one of the most
exciting moments in our partnership with them - Juan Pablo's
Indianapolis 500 win - is fantastic. Juan Pablo is one of the best
drivers in the world and I cannot think of a better partner for him and
our organization to represent."
Mark Schindele, Senior Vice President, Target:
"Target has been associated with many great drivers over the years and
has had the luxury of celebrating numerous great moments with Target
Chip Ganassi Racing. Juan Pablo's accomplishments are always at the top
of that list as he represents our brand well. This paint scheme is
simply a tribute to one of our combined greatest achievements."
