QNX and TeleCommunication Systems Bring Off-Board Navigation to QNX CAR Application Platform

OTTAWA and ANNAPOLIS, Md., July 22 -- QNX Software Systems, the global leader in operating systems and middleware for the automotive market, today announced that TCS Navigator, an innovative off-board navigation product from TeleCommunication Systems (TCS), has been integrated into the QNX CAR application platform.

TCS, a leading provider of mission-critical wireless communications, joins a growing number of contributors to QNX CAR, which helps automotive developers quickly prototype and develop infotainment systems, digital instrument clusters, and other in-car electronics products.

The preintegration of TCS Navigator into the QNX CAR application platform allows customers to incorporate navigation services earlier in the development process. By accessing off-board data, TCS Navigator can generate the optimal route based on real-time traffic conditions and provide up-to-minute traffic and point-of-interest information. TCS Navigator technology has a long history of successful deployments with leading telematics providers and wireless operators.

"TCS is pleased to collaborate with QNX Software Systems because we believe the future of the automotive experience will involve connectivity to the Internet -- a key goal of the QNX CAR application platform," said Kevin Tsurutome, vice president of location applications at TeleCommunication Systems. "By building infotainment systems that combine the power of the QNX CAR application platform and TCS off-board navigation technology, automakers can realize the vision of the truly connected vehicle."

The QNX CAR application platform offers sample applications, reference implementations, and a mechanism for delivering software updates and new features to the vehicle. It includes integrations with TCS Navigator, consumer media devices, Bluetooth, content management, Pandora Internet radio, and many other third-party technologies. These integrations can dramatically reduce the upfront engineering needed to initiate a prototyping program, both for OEMs proving out ideas in a lab and for tier one suppliers competing for their next customer win.

"The integration of TCS Navigator adds an exciting element to the QNX CAR application platform, especially the reference implementation for infotainment systems," said Tyler Nelson, vice president of marketing and business development at QNX Software Systems. "The alliance with TCS supports our strategy of enabling in-vehicle systems that are truly connected -- to the cloud, to portable devices, to each other, and to the surrounding environment."

As the leading supplier of middleware operating systems for automotive infotainment, QNX has licensed its technology for use in more than 10 million automotive systems, in vehicles from Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Fiat, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Saab, Ssangyong, Toyota, Volkswagen, and others. QNX software powers applications in more vehicle models (200) and is used by more automakers and suppliers than all other OS platforms combined.
