Six Sonoma wins makes Infineon Lucas' favorite track

Six Sonoma wins makes Infineon Lucas' favorite track

SONOMA, Calif. (July 20) -- Only the drag racing gods know why some drivers have certain tracks where they always seem to do well. For Top Fuel driver Morgan Lucas, that track is Infineon Raceway in Northern California's wine country, a place where he's claimed six career victories.

"Not only is Sonoma my all-time favorite racetrack, it's also the site of my favorite race win ever," Lucas said. "There's no place I'd rather be than No-Cal in the summer time."

The 25-year-old driver of the GEICO Powersports/Lucas Oil dragster claimed national event wins in Top Alcohol Dragster in 2002, 2004, and 2006 in Sonoma. He also won three Divisional races at Infineon in 2003, 2006, and 2007.

"There's no other place we go where I'm even close to having the success I've had in Sonoma," Lucas said. "I flat-out love this racetrack.

"In 2006, I had a total dream weekend there. Our second Top Fuel car won the race, I won in Top Alcohol Dragster, and my buddy Eric Medlen won Funny Car. It was the only time I got to share a winner's circle with Eric and man did we have fun that night. We all had smiles on our faces for about a month after that one.

"I think that win even outshines Atlanta, and that's saying something."

It was in Atlanta earlier this year when Lucas won his first national event in the Top Fuel class, riding crew chief Jimmy Walsh's expert tune-up to the top of the podium.

"I'm not sure why but I always thought my first Top Fuel win would come at Sonoma," said Lucas, the youngest professional in the nitro ranks. "I guess we'll just have to win our second title there instead. I certainly think we have the racecar to get it done.

"This is an exciting time of the year. The playoffs will be starting before we know it so it's time to be running at full speed because the points are going to reset after Indy and then anyone in the top 10 that gets hot will probably be the one that takes the championship. We'd like to be a part of that mix and I think we will be."
