HAMPTON, July 14, 2009: Hitting the season’s midpoint, Atlanta Motor Speedway’s seventh week of Friday Night Drags will showcase straight-line speed in 14 divisions, in addition to the weekly Show-N-Shine car show.

Week seven of Friday Night Drags will include a “Mopar Owners Rally” special Show-N-Shine class and a Kids’ Candy & Coin scramble to entertain Friday Night Drags’ youngest fans. And, of course, Friday Night Drags will feature 14 classes of street-style drag racing down Atlanta Motor Speedway’s pit-lane drag strip.

Kids’ Candy & Coin Scramble

Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Kids’ Candy & Coin Scramble returns for racing’s youngest fans attending the upcoming week of Friday Night Drags. Preceding elimination drag runs, kids will be allowed to come onto the Atlanta Motor Speedway infield to participate in the Kids’ Candy & Coin Scramble. The Kids’ Candy & Coin Scramble is open to all children in attendance and allows them to sprawl across the Atlanta Motor Speedway “ball field” and scramble for free coins and candy!

Mopar Owners Rally

Atlanta Motor Speedway features a special Show-N-Shine class each week and week seven will spotlight Mopar Power. The “Mopar Owners Rally” Show-N-Shine class will highlight the entire Mopar line, including Dodge, Chrysler, Mercury, Imperial and DeSoto, among other marques.

The weekly Show-N-Shine car show awards trophies in seven-total classes. Entry is just $20 and includes parade laps on Atlanta Motor Speedway’s full 1.54-mile quad oval. Upcoming Show-N-Shine special classes include a “Chevrolet Owners Rally,” “Super Bike Motorcycles,” and a “Foreign Car Owners Rally,” among others.

Tight Pro Points Race

Embattled in one of the most interesting points races at Friday Night Drags, the Pro class features the tightest points standings of any division.

Just one point separates the division’s points leader, Matt Mayber with 10 points, from his nearest rival Eddie Chapman with nine points. Making matters more interesting, third-place David Sisk sits just one mark behind Chapman, while Jerritt Scott has seven points in fourth place. Continuing down the line, Tony Morse has six points in fifth place and David Harbin has five points, before a pair of competitors sit with four.

Only one win separates Mayber from Chapman, with Mayber posting two wins (weeks three and five) to Chapman’s one (week two). With seven weeks of racing remaining, each is expected to make another visit to Victory Lane before year’s end, continuing a compelling points battle.

The 2009 Friday Night Drags season features heads up, street-style racing on AMS’ eighth-mile pit road drag strip. It will run on Friday nights through Sept. 11. Grandstand gates open at 6:30 p.m. and practice drag runs begin at 6:20 p.m. Show N' Shine car show judging begins at 8:20 p.m. with the elimination drag runs starting at approximately 9:00 p.m.

The series is open to any automobile and any driver, provided they possess a valid driver’s license. All racers ages 16 and 17 must have a fully-executed minor’s release form on file at the speedway prior to competition (forms available at the Speedway or at www.atlantamotorspeedway.com). Competitors must wear an approved helmet and have operational seat belts in the vehicle and pass a pre-race safety inspection.

Entry to drag race or for the Show N’ Shine is $20 or competitors can enter both for $30. Spectator admission is only $7 and exterior parking is free, while infield parking is $20.
