ASA TO SANCTION NEW OPEN-WHEEL ASA-BONDURANT CHAMPIONSHIP RACE SERIES
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 13, 2009) As a prelude to more planned road-racing
activities, the American Speed Association is proud to announce the
introduction of the ASA-Bondurant Championship Race Series. The renowned Bob
Bondurant School of High Performance Driving will now offer a professional
racing series as part of the school program.
The ASA-Bondurant Championship Race Series is sanctioned by ASA Racing. The
ASA-Bondurant Championship Race Series opens the 2009-2010 inaugural season
this September and includes 18 races over nine weekends utilizing the three
road courses at Firebird International Raceway in Chandler, Ariz.
Bob Bondurant, CEO of the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving,
stated: "This professional race series will give drivers a chance to compete
in identical cars on the three different Firebird International Raceway road
racing tracks. We are pleased to have ASA Racing sanction and support this
new program for us. ASA Racing has approved a rule book and will provide a
race director for the on-track racing. We look forward to running under the
American Speed Association banner."
Dennis Huth, president of the American Speed Association, said, "It is a
great honor and pleasure to work with my good friend, Bob Bondurant, and
sanction the new ASA-Bondurant Championship Race Series. This is an
important step in the growth of our road racing program, and we are looking
forward to this partnership of the ASA and Bondurant for years to come. I
find it a very exciting combination that two of the most pre-eminent names
in American motorsports are working together on this new series."
The first race weekend for the ASA-Bondurant Championship Race Series will
be September 25-27, 2009. Events will be held monthly until the
season-finale in May 2010. The race series will be contested during the fall
and winter months to take advantage of the cooler weather around the Phoenix
area.
Drivers will compete in one of Bondurant's newly acquired, purpose-built
Formula Mazda race cars during the weekend; the schedule will include Friday
testing followed by qualifying later that day. There will be a pair of
weekend races with competition taking place on Saturday and Sunday. These
race cars are powered by 13B Mazda rotary engines and equipped with proper
Goodyear racing slicks and 4-speed Hewland gearboxes. Bondurant's Formula
Mazdas offer a true racecar experience and the ABCRS is open to anyone 15
years or older that is a driver of "good standing" with the Bondurant School
of High Performance Driving.
Cost to participate in the ASA-Bondurant Championship Race Series is $3,495
per event; this fee includes car rental, instruction, and vehicle
maintenance. Participants are required to bring their own safety equipment
which includes helmets, suits, gloves, and head-and-neck restraints.
