Milwaukee Mile Hosted 550 Miles Of National Championship Auto Racing on June 20

West Allis, June 25, 2009: The rich history of auto racing dates back to 1903 at The Milwaukee Mile, the oldest active motor speedway in the country. Due to weather delays this past weekend, The Mile held three national championship events – 550 miles of racing in total – all on Saturday, June 20.

Wisconsin’s biggest motorsports weekend began with five inches of rain falling Thursday evening at The Milwaukee Mile. The speedway along with many area homes and businesses were flooded.

On Friday, damp air and overcast skies delayed what was to have been the Copart 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event day. After many hours of track preparation, the NASCAR Truck Series machines got on-track at 2:23 p.m. for the first time.

With a modified schedule for the remainder of Friday, NASCAR teams shared track time with the bright open wheel talents of the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear. Fans were treated to twenty NASCAR drivers signing autographs in the fan midway mid-afternoon, and all was good until the skies opened at 7:00 p.m.. The Copart 200 was a wash out that evening.

Friday night’s rain and already saturated race track grounds did not deter the efforts of the entire Milwaukee Mile staff and volunteers, who worked in cooperation with NASCAR and Star Mazda officials to prepare the facility for racing once gates opened Saturday morning. Most importantly, the fans turned out in force to watch history in the making at America’s Legendary Oval on Saturday.

With the use of temporary MUSCO Lighting towers, The Mile put in place a very aggressive and fair schedule for Saturday, which meant all three series – NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Star Mazda Championship and the NASCAR Nationwide Series – held their main events on Saturday, culminating with a 7:45 p.m. green flag on the NorthernTool.com 250 NNS event.

For the first time since 2003, a NASCAR event was held during the day at The Milwaukee Mile, as winner Ron Hornaday led the most laps in the early afternoon Copart 200 NCWTS event.

The sun continued to shine when the Star Mazda Championship teams completed their first rolling start of the season in a 100-mile event won by 21 year-old Scandinavian speedster Anders Krohn.

By the 4:35 p.m. qualification session on Saturday, the race day was back on schedule. NASCAR driver Erik Darnell of nearby Beach Park, Ill. put sponsor Northern Tool + Equipment on the pole position, and jet-setting NASCAR stars Kyle Busch and Edwards raced their way to the front amid plenty of great NASCAR action in the NASCAR Nationwide Series 250-mile nightcap.

More racing in a single day occurred at The Milwaukee Mile than any other time in the historic speedway’s history.

NASCAR tradition matched by determined individuals and an appreciative crowd made June 20, 2009 another historic day, one of many, at America’s Legendary Oval.
