Washington, D.C. June 16, 2009; Today, funding for Congresswoman Sutton's CARS Act was approved with the passage of the House supplemental appropriations bill. The legislation will also provide $500 monthly payments for every month soldiers have been subject to stop-loss. Firefighters will also benefit from this supplemental through the expansion of the permissible uses for SAFER grants that will be used to rehire or retain much-needed firefighters. Additionally, funding for our troops, pandemic flu response and other urgent needs is included. The measure passed the House by a margin of 226-202.

"Passage of the House supplemental bill brings us one step closer to helping consumers, improving the environment and boosting auto sales," Rep. Sutton said. "Through this supplemental, soldiers will finally receive the compensation they deserve. They have gone far above and beyond the call of duty in serving our country.

"In my district, many communities have had to lay off firefighters. I am very pleased that language is included that will expand the permissible uses of SAFER grants and permit communities to rehire and retain firefighters. Protecting the jobs of our first responders is a top priority in ensuring safety for all communities."

The Senate is expected to take up the supplemental tomorrow.
