Shanghai vehicles to meet China IV standards

Shanghai, May 27 (Gasgoo.com) Starting November 1, 2009, buses, sanitation vehicles and postal vans, as well as all light gasoline-powered vehicles, will have to meet the China IV emission standards, and accordingly the gasoline prices will be raised slightly, China Business News said today.

Shanghai's environmental protection bureau said yesterday that the emission standards are improved to curb the pollution of motor vehicles. The combustion-engine models weighing 3,500 kg and less will be the first bunch of vehicles required to meet the new China IV standards, excluding the light-duty diesel vehicles.

Shanghai started to implement the China I emission standards in 1999, China II standards in 2003 and China III in 2007 first for buses and taxis. When the China IV standards are implemented later this year, the special gasoline of the new standards will be a little more expensive.

The China IV standards are expected to reduce the pollutant emissions of a single light vehicle by about 50% compared with the China III standards, to cut the pollutant emissions of a heavy vehicle by about 30%, and to lower the particle emissions by more than 80%.

The environmental and traffic authorities in Shanghai said that the China IV standards will cover new vehicles. The existing vehicles that have been registered according to the China IV standards can run on the road as usual.
