Alvarado, DeVilbiss turn out the lights on EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West
Modified Tour competition
VERNAL, Utah (May 16) - Ricky Alvarado and Zane DeVilbiss turned the
lights off on the competition at Diamond Mountain Speedway, in the
second doubleheader of the EQ Cylinder Heads
<http://www.eqcylinderheads.com/> Wild West Modified Northern Tour
season.
Alvarado, the two-time defending IMCA <http://www.imca.com/> Modified
series champion, topped the feature rescheduled from Friday after a
power shortage left the track dark after six heats races were run.
DeVilbiss had his hands full in capturing the second checkers, regaining
the lead from Harvey Howard after midway and then holding off Alvarado.
Both wins paid $1,250. Alvarado was already qualified for the Fast
Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot while DeVilbiss became vote eligible
with his victory.
Taking the initial green flag in the first feature from the fifth
starting spot, Alvarado passed pole starter Zane DeVilbiss for the lead
on just the third circuit.
Kevin Wright passed 10 cars and ended in second. Justen Yeager,
DeVilbiss and Bubba Alvarado rounded out the top five.
Richard Anderson started 17th and finished sixth.
Back on the pole for the second show of the twinbill, DeVilbiss saw
Howard charge by on lap five and needed six laps to get the lead back.
Ricky Alvarado made a strong bid to extend his series win streak, which
dates from the last year, to six, but came up just short.
Yeager, Don Baisch and Anderson followed. Colton Vanderherp impressed
with a sixth place finish after starting last in the field of 24.
Alvarado now owns 20 career tour wins, DeVilbiss a pair. The series is
next at Desert Thunder Raceway in Price, Utah, for Friday and Saturday,
June 12-13 shows.
