WOLFSBURG/HANOVER, GERMANY – April 20, 2009: Volkswagen is showcasing modern products and efficient production technologies at Hannover Messe 2009 which opens its doors today. The highlight on the first day of the trade fair is the latest Polo BlueMotion study with CO2 emissions of a mere 87g/km.
Host Prof. Jürgen Leohold, Executive Director of Group Research, today celebrated the German premiere of the near-series Polo study together with Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Christian Wulff. “With this Polo 1.2 l TDI, which will probably be launched in 2010, we have impressively combined resource conservation and practical environmental protection,” Leohold said. With an average consumption of 3.3 liters per 100 km, the vehicle sets a completely new benchmark in its class.
“A vehicle like Volkswagen’s new low-consumption Polo demonstrates that Lower Saxony is a strong car manufacturing base and an innovative research base as well,” Prime Minister Wulff commented. Felix Magath und Dieter Hecking, the trainers of the two German Premier League soccer clubs VfL Wolfsburg and Hannover 96, were also impressed by the world’s most economical five-seater showcased in the very latest new color “emotion blue”.
The BlueMotionTechnologies label - the new umbrella brand for the most efficient technologies from Volkswagen – covers all of Volkswagen’s production-mature or near-production technologies and products that significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The Polo BlueMotion study scores with the new 1.2.liter TDI engine plus new systems, some of which already feature in series models, such as the automatic start-stop, an aerodynamics package or regenerative braking (energy is recovered when braking and decelerating).
Volkswagen is focusing on transparency in Hanover, both as regards using lightweight materials for vehicle construction and when developing biogenic fuels to reduce CO2 emissions. Visitors to the Volkswagen stand can view the exhibits presenting many modern fuel and drivetrain strategies such as TDI, TSI and DSG. They all have one thing in common: low consumption and dynamic driving performance.
The Volkswagen stand D50, Hall 16 at Hannover Messe can be visited until Friday, April 24. Hannover Messe is open daily from 9.00 a.m. – 6.00 p.m.
