Quarter Midget Cody makes it two in a row

DELAWARE, April 19, 2009: Third-generation racer Cody Coughlin won his second consecutive USAC-sanctioned Quarter Midget race Saturday evening, taking the main event at Kil-Kare Raceway in Xenia, Ohio, as part of the action of the Miami Valley Quarter Midget Racing Association.

Crew chief Tom McCauley and car chief Aaron Scott got the most out of their A Main Racing Engine and Nervo Chassis and 13-year-old Coughlin did the rest, racing to the quickest lap in qualifying of 7.24 seconds and taking the win at the event, which was attended by more than 60 teams.

"Cody's really getting comfortable in the car and it's showing on the racetrack," said proud father John Coughlin, the son of Hall-of-Famer Jeg Coughlin Sr. "He won the last race of the indoor winter series last month and hadn't been in the car since, but he came right out and won the first outdoor race of the year, so that's exciting.

"I think he really enjoyed racing at night under the lights and he was thrilled his mother Diana was there because she missed the last race. My wife's a former cheerleader and I swear you could hear her over the cars, cheering him on the entire race, which was 25-laps long. It was a great night for all of us."

Cody competes in the Honda 120 Class and plans to run for the track championships at three different facilities -- Columbus Motor Speedway (where he won last month), Kil-Kare Raceway, and Mac-O-Chee Raceway at Lion's Park in West Liberty, Ohio.

"As long as he's having fun, and keeps his grades up at school, we're going to stay out there racing and see what we can do," John said.
