TULLAMARINE, AUSTRALIA – March 19, 2009: Honda, the world’s leading engine producer and trendsetter in low emission vehicles, is going even further to reduce the environmental impact of its factories and office headquarters through its “Green Factories” and “Green Buildings” program in North America.

The initiative plans to increase energy efficiency, reduce waste and enhance recycling activities at all North American plants, buildings and factories.

The majority of its North American manufacturing plants comply with third-party ISO 14001 certifications (International Standard for Environmental Management Systems) for reducing waste landfill by approximately 17 per cent last year alone. Honda Australia’s head office in Melbourne also complies with ISO 14001 certifications.

Through its “Green Purchasing” program, Honda encourages and supports activities by more than 600 North American parts suppliers to adopt green factory programs, including reducing packaging waste and adopting more energy-efficient processes.

Honda Australia’s Managing Director, Mr. Yasuhide Mizuno, is proud of Honda’s global efforts in taking a lead in reducing emissions.

“It is important for Honda to continue to produce environmentally friendly products such as the zero-emission FCX Clarity and the Insight Hybrid. However we must also ensure we reduce emissions in all of our activities,” Mr. Mizuno said.

Honda Australia also employs a number of environmentally-friendly initiatives including:

  • The use of Bioflex skins on all outdoor billboards
  • A partnership with Adshel to recycle outdoor furniture posters
  • All brochures are printed on 9lives 80% post consumer fibre and 20% totally chlorine-free pulp (FSC certified mixed source paper which ensures that all virgin pulp is derived from well managed forests and is manufactured by an ISO 14001 certified mill)
  • The use of solar panels on many of its large format outdoor sites to help limit the amount of power taken from the main grid in advertising

Honda Australia also conducts regular environmental audits and assessments of compliance.
