TOPEKA, Kan. March 16, 2009: Even in the midst of a troubled economy and struggling auto industry, manufacturer support for the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Championships is strong. In 2009, Acura, BMW, Ford, Mazda, Porsche, Volkswagen, Viper and Volvo have all committed their support to the 20th season of World Challenge.
The most relevant racing series around, World Challenge has long won over fans by putting production-based cars piloted by world-class drivers on the best tracks in North America for exhilarating 50-minute sprint races. Auto manufacturers have recognized the appeal and marketing power of World Challenge, as the cars battling on track to be the first to cross the finish line look strikingly identical to those a consumer can purchase from the showroom floor.
In 2009, Acura will defend its World Challenge Touring Car Manufacturers’ Championship Presented by RACER Magazine against some stiff competition, including three-time Champion BMW, 2006 Manufacturers’ Champion Mazda and German powerhouse Volkswagen.
The 2009 World Challenge GT Manufacturers’ Championship Presented by RACER Magazine will be a gripping showdown between defending Champion Porsche, newcomer Volvo and the America muscle of Ford and Viper.
“The level of manufacturer involvement in World Challenge speaks volumes about the strength and quality of the series,” WC Vision VP of Partnership Relations Scott Bove said. “In an economic climate such as this, our manufacturer sponsors continue to see value in the series. With the new TV format and marketing efforts put into place this season, they’ll be getting back even more than they expected.”
