World Speed Motorsports has run Formula Mazdas and run in the Star Mazda Series since 1991. During that time they have taken a few hiatuses when the ingredients for a proper season were not in place. In 2009 the team will take such a hiatus. "We are fortunate from a business standpoint to have other racing efforts and ventures," stated World Speed Motorsports CEO, Telo Stewart, "These economic times are very challenging to everyone and race teams in particular, so we are happy to have some diversification so that we are not forced into effectively sponsoring drivers just to keep the doors open." The team will compete in a handful of the nationally televised events, and is expected to bring multiple cars out for the Miller Motorsports and Mazda Raceway events. "We have run in the Star Series since 1991 and have refocused our efforts a couple of times," noted World Speed President Telo Stewart. "We did a limited schedule in Star Mazda while we were running Champ Car Atlantic and Formula Renault in 2002-2003, and then we did a half season in 2004 to allow us the manpower to get the West Coast Series up and running." "The Molecule Formula Mazda Challenge is a series we have been promoting since late 2004, and this will be a great opportunity for our entire team to focus on this key element of our business," said World Speed Operations Manager Mark Milazzo. "We have new partnership programs in place, and some very interesting programs and products coming online in 2009 and having our championship level team and engineering staff at headquarters more often will be beneficial to all of these." The Molecule Formula Mazda Challenge is a regional Star Mazda series that keeps costs in check by limiting travel to a general region and racing spec open wheel cars. There are three classes that are welcomed to compete in the events; The Pro Formula Mazda, the Standard Formula Mazda, and the Formula E powered by Mazda. The MOLECULE Formula Mazda Challenge forges into its fifth consecutive season as an officially sanctioned NASA race group.
