OBERG MOTORSPORTS IS TORC?D FOR THE 2009 SEASON
Eagle River, WI (March 2, 2009) - After a winter of uncertainty,
Mike Oberg and his AMSOIL Kumho Tire Chevy Silverado PRO-2 truck can?t
wait for the inaugural season of the Traxxas Off-Road Championship
Series (TORC) to begin. The sixteen round TORC Pro series has
scheduled eight rounds of racing in the Midwest and eight rounds on
the West Coast. This national series was created when
Supercross/Motocross legend, Ricky Johnson, combined the legendary
Midwest off-road racing venues with his series, Off-Road Grand Prix.
The 2008 race season saw Oberg competing in the CORR (Championship
Off-Road Racing) series, but the downturn in the economy forced the
series? owner to cancel final two weekends, and eventually, shut down
the entire CORR operation. The off-season left off-road racers in
limbo, looking a place to race that would fulfill the requirements of
their sponsors? contacts. Fortunately, Ricky Johnson and Mitch
Covington got together with input from the newly formed Professional
Drivers Group (PDG), to create a national series with a soon to be
announced television package.
?After CORR shut its doors, the 2009 season was in limbo for us,?
commented Oberg. ?I knew we would be at Crandon, no matter what, but
ultimately it?s our sponsors that dictate where we race. The
formation of TORC is the perfect combination of Midwest tradition and
West Coast history. With Ricky Johnson at the helm and several key
staff members formerly from WSORR at his side, along with USAC
sanctioning, this series will continue the growth of short course
off-road for years to come.?
The first race of the season is May 15-16 at Manzanita Speedway in
Phoenix, Arizona.
The rest of the race schedule is as follows:
May 29-30 Perris Auto Speedway, Perris, CA
June 20-21 Crandon, WI
July 11-12 Bark River, MI (no pro points, Sportsman East)
August 8-9 Bark River, MI
August 29-30 Perris, CA (Sportsman West, no pro points)
September 5-6 Crandon, WI (double points) (proposed Network TV)
September 26-27 TBD***
October 31-November 1 Las Vegas, NV (proposed NETWORK TV)
November 2 Awards Banquet in Las Vegas and SEMA Kickoff Party
Hosted by Cary Hart at Hard Rock Hotel
Mike Oberg adds, ?It will be great to race at all the tracks in the
Midwest again. Our fan base is huge at all those spots. We will be
able to stay at home all summer. It will be good for the team to be
able to spend more time with their families during that time of year.
The way the schedule is laid out, it minimizes the travel costs to
make all the races. I can?t wait to getting behind the wheel of the
AMSOIL Kumho Chevy again. After all it?s been race ready since last
October.?
