Dangerous Recession Causes Road Safety to Crash
BURY ST EDMUNDS, England, March 2 -- In times of economic crisis many people, threatened with redundancy, turn to the teaching professions for job security and a boost to their self esteem. Already, teacher training establishments are reporting record numbers of applicants and the driver training industry can expect a major influx of trainee driving instructors. Unlike teaching, where entrance requirements are high and the personality and attitudes of the trainee teacher are carefully assessed, aspiring driving instructors can buy themselves into this profession.
Most instructor training providers take on anybody with very little assessment of ability to communicate or initial motivation. Where did the idea come from that just because someone likes driving they will be able to teach people to drive? That's like boiling an egg and believing you can become a chef; or finishing your 10 year old's maths homework and thinking you can teach maths. Training providers must be more selective and ensure that road safety is the real focus in the candidate's mind.
Those that succeed - and many do not - in passing the three-part qualifying examination set by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), find themselves in a highly competitive industry, amongst many well-experienced Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs), who jealously guard their patch where they are both well-established and well-regarded. Forced to reduce their lesson prices to entice young people to learn with them, these newly qualified and inexperienced ADIs are at great risk of knocking down the pass rates and building up the novice driver crash rates, thus bringing the ADI industry further into disrepute.
Driving instruction as a profession is desperate for discerning individuals, who have an ability to communicate, coupled with a passion for road safety. Training providers should be actively seeking out those, who meet these standards and deterring those, who do not. They must step up to their responsibilities, if the driver training industry and road safety are going to survive this recession.
