ASPEN, Colo. February 21, 2009: After earning the 2008 SCCA SPEED GT Rookie of the Year, Gunter Schaldach returns with his No. 9 Lala Motorsports Dodge Viper for the 2009 SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Championship.
When Schaldach’s daughter, Lala, was diagnosed with cancer in September of 2005, he had just started time trialing at club events in California. Once a treatment plan was established for Lala, Schaldach decided to join the Touring Car Racing Association. Realizing his passion for competitive racing, Schaldach quickly made the move to pro racing.
In 2007, with the overwhelming support of his wife and daughter, Schaldach started training for his first professional event, the SPEED GT finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The courage Lala continually demonstrated during her treatment inspired Schaldach to enter the full SPEED GT season in 2008.
Lala successfully completed two years of chemotherapy treatment in November 2007. Lala’s courage in her battle with cancer has been converted to Schaldach’s desire to help other children suffering from pediatric leukemia. Lala Motorsports is the avenue that the Schaldach family will use to bring exposure to the need for continued efforts to help fund research for pediatric leukemia. Gunter, his wife Holli and Lala are dedicated to the pursuit for the prevention of leukemia so others do not have to suffer as Lala has. Lala Motorsports was started with the intention to keep the Schaldach family focused on a common goal, but it has quickly turned into assisting all families who are dealing with this tragic disease. The Schaldachs match race winnings with personal funds and donate the money to fund leukemia research.
The new season will be a progressive one, with Lala Motorsports’ diligent pursuit to find a sponsor who is also committed to supporting pediatric leukemia research. Lala Motorsports is sponsoring two races this year: Long Beach and Watkins Glen, in the hopes of attracting sponsors who share their goals.
Since his first race, Schaldach’s wife and daughter have not missed a single event. The dedicated support of Holli and Lala is the foundation that will drive Lala Motorsports to the front of the pack in the coming 2009 SPEED GT season.
Lala Motorsports has hired Alchemy Motorsports Group to evaluate and optimize the two Dodge Vipers in the Lala Motorsports garage. The Alchemy crew is led by veteran racers Nathan McBride and Tyler Brower. The Alchemy Motorsports staff has a long history of winning in professional racing, including several World Challenge Championships on their resume. Lala Motorsports and Alchemy Motorsports Group share the same vision: consistently racing at the front of the pack, with the SPEED GT Championship as the ultimate goal.
With the acquisition of a second Dodge Viper at the end of 2008, Lala Motorsports will be preparing two identical cars for the 2009 season. The second car is available for a funded driver on a full or partial season schedule.
