The Big Screen Through a Windscreen: smart Brings the Drive-in Back to Melbourne
MULGRAVE, Australia – February 18, 2009: Residents and guests in the city of Melbourne will soon be able to relive Saturday nights of old and experience going to the drive-in theatre just as they remember it.
From February 24, the No-Vacancy gallery in Melbourne’s QV centre, located on Swanston Street in the CBD, will screen a variety of independent films and guests will be able to enjoy the entertainment from the comfort of a smart fortwo.
Offering movie-goers a twist on going to the flicks, nine of the iconic two-seater smart cars will be parked in front of a cinema screen inside the gallery, providing the experience and fun of the drive-in but without hassles of the past. The indoor venue will mean no need for windscreen wipers in the event of rain, and air-conditioning will mean no steamy windows.
And because the smart fortwo is a two-seat city car, each screening will have a maximum of only 18 guests, making the indoor drive-in an exclusive affair.
Sponsored by smart Centre Melbourne, the entertainment programme will include a selection of films by Madman Entertainment, one of Australia’s leading independent film distributors responsible for memorable movies such as Kenny and Akira.
The smart fortwo: perfect for safe fun
The little fortwo is
the ideal drive-in car. More tardis than tiny, movie-goers will enjoy
plenty of shoulder and leg room, and feel at home in the comfortable offset
seating.
The lack of both a back seat in the fortwo as well as a panel van model in smart’s catalogue should allay the fears of concerned parents and keep in-car hijinx to a minimum.
Guests should note that because the cars will already be parked in front of the screen smuggling friends into the theatre by hiding them in the boot will be difficult.

This unique and fun
entertainment concept will commence on Tuesday 24 February and run until
Sunday 1 March, with screenings every evening at 8pm.
