Walkers and Motorcyclists Unite for Walk MS 2009

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.--The National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS), Southern New York Chapter, is pleased to announce the addition of a motorcycle feature to its annual WALK MS event in Westchester County. The Westchester Beemers Motorcycle Club will sponsor a three-hour motorcycle fund-raising ride with all proceeds donated to the National MS Society, Southern NY Chapter.

On Sunday, April 19th, 2009 Walkers and Motorcyclists will assemble at Rye Playland, Rye, NY, site of the annual WALK MS event. After sharing a light breakfast, participants depart on their respective Walk or Motorcycle Ride. The Walkers will complete a six-mile circuit as Motorcyclists cruise a scenic loop through western Connecticut. Both groups will rendezvous three hours later at Rye Playland, for lunch and entertainment.

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS.

“We are delighted to welcome the motorcycling community to join the movement against MS,” said Terry Ebersole, Director of Development for NMSS, Southern NY Chapter. “We have plenty of room for a variety of activities all focused on one goal – helping people with MS, their families and friends fight back.”

Kurt Abisch, President of Westchester Beemers, adds, “Sponsoring a charitable ride is a popular and rewarding activity for today’s motorcycling clubs. Westchester Beemers has a number of personal connections with MS, from parents to spouses. Teaming up with NMSS was the logical next step for us. We look forward to the excitement and energy our motorcyclists will add to this event.”

Last year’s WALK MS drew 2,000 participants. The Motorcyclists will compliment this year’s event with an estimated 50 to 100 riders and family members. The goal for the 2009 combined Westchester Walk and Motorcycle Ride event is $450,000.
