TOPEKA, Kan. February 6, 2009: Programming for the 45th SCCA National Championship Runoffs concludes with a GT-1 photo finish on SPEED, Tuesday, Feb. 10.
Starting second, defending GT-1 Champion Tony Ave is quick to take over the lead from polesitter Bill Gray when the green flag waves. Driving the No. 49 BGR Inc. Chevrolet Corvette, Gray falls back another spot to third, courtesy of James Goughary Jr.’s No. 70 Luna Sueno Tequila/Red Line Chevrolet Corvette. While Gray tries to work his way around Goughary, Ave drops the hammer aboard his No. 36 Lamers Motor Racing/Pro-Motor/Goodyear Ford Mustang and opens up a gap of more than five seconds on the rest of the field.
Though five seconds may seem like an insurmountable gap for Gray to overcome after getting past Goughary, Ave’s Mustang begins to experience a fuel pressure problem, causing the gap to shrink exponentially over the closing laps of the race. On the final corner of the final lap, Gray pulls his Covette alongside Ave, making it a drag race to the finish. It’s one you won’t want to miss, so tune into SPEED at 2 p.m. (EDT) on Tuesday, Feb. 10 to see who will be crowned the 2008 GT-1 National Champion.
