Nissan Production, Sales And Export Results For December And Calendar Year 2008

TOKYO, Japan – January 28, 2009: Nissan Motor Co., Ltd, today announced its sales, production and export results for December and the calendar year 2008.
1. Production
2008 saw global vehicle demand decline
sharply due to the global financial and economic crisis. In response,
Nissan has made continuous production adjustments in order to manage
inventory levels and ensure a balanced production supply.
December
Nissan's global production in December decreased
35.9% year-on-year to 176,174 units.
Production in Japan decreased 40.9% year-on-year to 67,672 units.
Production outside of Japan decreased 32.3% year-on-year to 108,502 units.
In the U.S., production decreased 55.8% year-on-year to 21,240 units.
In Mexico, production decreased 23.3% year-on-year to 22,995 units.
In the U.K., production decreased 46.4% year-on-year to 13,275 units.
In Spain, production decreased 82.4% year-on-year to 2,449 units.
Production in the General Overseas Markets (GOM) grew 11.5% year-on-year to 48,543 units due to increased demand in China for the X-TRAIL and Teana.
Calendar Year 2008
Nissan's global production in 2008
decreased 1.1% year-on-year to 3,394,830 units.
Production in Japan increased 9.7% year-on-year to 1,293,082 units.
Overseas production dropped 6.7% year-on-year to 2,101,748 units.
In the U.S., production decreased 22.5% year-on-year to 545,057 units.
In Mexico, production decreased 9.2% year-on-year to 450,968 units.
In the U.K., production increased 9.3% year-on-year to 386,555 units.
In Spain, production decreased 29.5% year-on-year to 157,237 units.
Production in the GOM regions grew 18.2% year-on-year to 561,931 units due to increased demand for Teana in China and the Livina series in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, South Africa and the Philippines.
2. Sales
December
Global sales decreased
20.1% to 254,754 units compared to the previous year.
In Japan, Nissan's vehicle registrations in December decreased 21.7% year-on-year to 26,932 units. Nissan's share of the domestic market registrations in December was up 0.1 percentage points year-on-year to 14.7%.
Domestic sales of mini-vehicles were down 14.0% from the previous year to 8,041 units.
Including mini-vehicles, Nissan sold 34,973 units in Japan, down 20.1% year-on-year. Market share was down 0.5 percentage points year-on-year to 11.4%.
Nissan sales in the U.S. decreased 30.7% year-on-year to 62,102 units.
In Europe, sales decreased 25.6% year-on-year to 36,646 units. Market share was up 0.2 percentage points year-on-year to 2.7%.
Sales in the GOM regions were down 8.7% from the previous year to 96,398 units. Sales in China increased 6.0% year-on-year to 53,761 units.
Calendar Year 2008
Global sales increased 0.9% year-on-year
to 3,708,074 units.
In Japan, Nissan's vehicle registrations in 2008 decreased 5.8% year-on-year to 537,512 units. Nissan’s share of the domestic market for the year 2008 was up 0.1 percentage points from the previous year to 16.7%.
Domestic sales of mini-vehicles were down 6.4% from the previous year to 140,614 units.
Including mini-vehicles, Nissan sold 678,126 units in Japan, down 5.9% year-on-year. Market share was down 0.2 percentage points year-on-year to 13.3%.
Sales in the U.S. decreased 10.9% year-on-year to 951,350 units.
In Europe, sales increased 5.5% year-on-year to 601,647 units due to increased demand for Qashqai and Tiida. In Russia, sales increased 26.5% year-on-year to 154,340 units.
Sales in the GOM regions were up 15.3% from the previous year to 1,180,085 units.
3. Japan Exports
December
Nissan's exports
in December decreased 58.3% year-on-year to 34,925 units.
Exports to North America decreased 72.4% year-on-year to 9,664 units.
Exports to Europe decreased 89.1% year-on-year to 1,031 units.
Calendar Year 2008
Nissan’s exports for the year 2008
increased 20.2% year-on-year to 776,738 units.
Exports to North America increased 17.2% year-on-year to 303,413 units.
Exports to Europe increased 20.2% year-on-year to 96,486 units.
